Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and a utility that provides gas to New York City and Long Island have been locked in a standoff since May, when New York regulators blocked the construction of a $1 billion natural gas pipeline that would have run from Pennsylvania to New Jersey and New York.
The utility, National Grid, says the pipeline is crucial to meeting the rising energy demand in the region and has imposed a moratorium, refusing to activate gas hookups for both new and returning customers.
On Tuesday, the fight took a sharp turn after Mr. Cuomo threatened to revoke National Grids license to operate in the southern part of New York.
Mr. Cuomo, in a letter, accused the utility of mishandling its gas supply system and recklessly disregarding its obligations as a public utility when it issued the moratorium.
The utilitys fundamental legal obligation was to plan and provide for future needs, the governor wrote. You failed by your own admission.
National Grid, which supplies gas to 1.8 million customers in New York City and on Long Island, said it would review Mr. Cuomos letter and respond accordingly.
We continue to work with all parties on these critical natural gas supply issues on behalf of all our customers in downstate New York, the utility said in a statement.
The moratorium has left some people in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island in flux. Developers have been unable to provide gas to new buildings, business owners cannot obtain requested upgrades and homeowners have had to fight to get suspended gas service restored.
At this point, a number of projects are in limbo because of uncertainty over the energy supply, said Kathryn S. Wylde, the president of the Partnership for New York City, an influential business group.

Just crank up the psi 50% over capacity and let the whole place blow
Yeah? How much do they need to contribute to your campaign in order to meet their future needs?
Tinpot dictator Cuomo thinks natural gas can be transported if he orders the utility company to turn on the tap.
What a maroon.
Ayn Rand was a prophet.....................
Sounds like California. Hmm, what do these two (once dynamic) states have in common?
Hilarious!
How to go from the First World to the Third World in just a few years? Elect a bunch of Democrats.
Good luck, Virginia!
Dear Mr Cuomo,
Due to the all but certain litigation that will arise from your complaint, we are Suspending ALL Natural Gas Shipments and Supply to the State of New York in an effort to mitigate any possible damages that may result.
That's what they are doing you DEMOCRAT IDIOT!.... but I repeat myself.....................
impeach Andrew Evil Eye Cuomo.
Impeachment seems to be all the rage!
Socialists fighting socialists. Love it.
How they operate is fully on display. Restrict access to the things that the masses need ($$$) and force it all to run through politicians and consolidate power.
It’s a lesson about why carbon is this phantom enemy of climate.
It’s like Ayn Rand traveled to the future and then wrote Atlas Shrugged. Oh wait, she did, she escaped from a communist country and when you’ve lived in one of them you know the future of every other one.
What absolute insanity. No words.
I love it how Democrat politicians turn around on a dime and demand the private sector save them from the consequences of their own stupid anti energy policies.
Policies they themselves adopted to help fight climate change. Suddenly fossil fuels arent so bad after all! Geez.
If National Grid were smart they would use this opportunity to disassociate itself from Cuomo and New York State. Eventually New York will be forced to import costly Norwegian or Algerian liquid natural gas. Sure there are already Democratic insiders skimming the contracts. The cost of energy will rise over 40% in NY, Connecticut and NJ over the next five years.
The PG&E wildfire saga showed me that utilities are not at all safe investments in places like NY or CA (and probably many other states)
The leftist governments there look at them as stated-owned entities.
“Mr. Cuomo, in a letter, accused the utility of mishandling its gas supply system and recklessly disregarding its obligations as a public utility when it issued the moratorium. “
It is Mr Cuomo who is behaving recklessly. They have INTENTIONALLY failed to approve a new natural gas pipeline, to feed the politics of a “green” agenda. Failing to insure the pipeline needed to for an adequate supply is provided, Cuomo then threatens the supplier for doing what is prudent, and best for the system overall - not approving new hook ups.
If it were possible, Cuomo ought to be arrested for “abuse of office” for “political purposes”.
Just follow CuoCuo's orders.
Hook up all the new lines he wants.
The increased flow demand will drop the pressure.
The lower pressure will reduce the flow to below where pilot lights stay on.
No pilot lights will cause a trickle of gas build up in structures.
Gas build up will cause structures to explode and burst into flame.
Gas can then be shut off to the destroyed structures.
This will increase the pressure available for surviving structures and residents.
Problem solved. Easy-peasy
