"Thinking out loud" is a far cry from a direct order in my mind.

I'm sure Trump and his people toss around all sorts of ideas, scenarios, etc... every leader does that.

I can imagine Trump and Mattis (and all the aides) sitting around, discussing Kim... I can imagine Trump saying "what if we just sent someone in to take the guy out?"... I can imagine Mattis saying "perhaps we could, but I see problem x,y, z". I can imagine the Hill spinning this as "defying Trump's orders".

The Hill and their unnamed former official (if even real) are slinging B.S. as per usual.

I don’t think Smedley was considering the money to
be made by war profiteering, as much as government
protecting private business interests such as
the Banana growers because of their lobbying
prowess and corruption in congress that allowed
the military to be used in such a way.
The growers did profit from the war but the problem
came from the use of war to protect their interests.
I hope I’m right about this.

So I think he had some idea what he was talking about.

I was not Infantry, so I never met nor served under GEN Mattis. Many Marines consider him almost the second coming of Chesty Puller. I think some people are great in combat, but stick them behind a desk and they don't know how to act.

She's part of the Chicago political sewer acting as stenographer to what 'unnamed sources' are telling her to write.

POTUS already said why he fired Mattis and explained it so well showing his great common sense.

Remember when POTUS was deskbound 'all alone' on Christmas in the White House during the government shutdown? POTUS took a secret trip to Syria, why? You can find a slew of articles, just search "all alone white house Trump secret trip Syria". This secret trip to Syria resulted in Mattis's firing.

Donald Trump learned since he was as a young man under his father that you listen to your general contractors but you secretly check what they tell you with the working stiffs onsite. Common sense 101. What does this mean?

It means when POTUS asked his senior neocon staff including SecDef Mattis "when was the soonest we could be out of Syria?" he checked their answer by asking troops on the ground. He was told that troops were needed in Syria for two more years to defeat ISIS. So POTUS took a secret midnight trip 12:03 am December 26, 2018 to Syria under cover of darkness. When he arrived he asked senior field commanders how long would it take to defeat ISIS and they told him two weeks with a no-holds-barred assault.

POTUS was justifiably pissed.

Bye-Bye Mattis.

I was suspicious of Mattis & McMaster from the start. They both earned their spurs under Obama — a time when scores of senior officers were being fired and early-retired for “loss of command confidence”. We know that Obama’s Justice Department, IRS, FBI & CIA were controlled by partisan hacks. Is it so hard to believe that he eventually had control of the Pentagon after so many officers were shown the door?
