Gov. Mike DeWine said Tuesday that he will propose an increase in the gasoline tax and it could be a sizable one to fix and improve Ohios crumbling roads and bridges.
The first-year Republican would not reveal the size of the proposed hike.
DeWine told reporters the recommended increase would maintain the status quo of highway maintenance and some major projects. That would require another $600 million per year, or an additional 14 cents a gallon a 50 percent increase in the 28-cent tax based on figures from the Department of Transportation.
The elevation will be proposed in the two-year state transportation budget he plans to submit Thursday to the House of Representatives, DeWine said at the Ohio Associated Press biennial legislative preview session.
Ohios fuel tax has not been increased since 2005. Each one-cent increase would generate $67 million, with the state keeping 60 percent and 40 percent going to local governments. So the overall take on a 14-cent increase would be $1 billion.
You have to have a gas tax increase, theres no doubt, DeWine said. The day of reckoning is finally here and we have an obligation to face that.
Raising more money is vital to both ensuring the safety of Ohios roadways and bridges and preserving the infrastructure needed to feed the economy, he said.
The state issued $2.1 billion in construction contracts this year, and that number is set to drop to $1.5 billion next year with no new revenue. That would fall short of the $1 billion per year that Transportation Director Jack Marchbanks said the state needs to provide optimal funding for major road construction, safety projects and maintenance.

OF course the need is $1B more.
The authors of the piece (and editors?) don’t want to come out and say it apparently.
“Next week’s chocolate ration is increased from 20 grams to 18 grams. All hail Big Brother.”
Probably just a typo...
(sign me, sick of fake and deceptive ‘news’ reporting)
I’ll report to Room 101 at Big Brother’s convenience. [snicker]
Mileage-based is the fairest.
Do you really want Volts to get a free ride and Priuses to go for half price?
How is it more fair than a mileage tax?
If the politicians would just cut their graft back by 15% on even 10% they could build all new roads.
DeWino, you ignorant slut!
Where does gas tax and toll revenues go to? Do they actually go towards maintaining the roads, or are they used for bike paths, green spaces, or spent along with the general fund like SS taxes are?
Why do gas taxes need to be raised if we're driving less and using more fuel-efficient vehicles? Isn't that what our overlords want?
In our town, they put the Vote for Road Tax sign right next to the biggest pothole on Main Street.
I called them extortionists, and voted no.
They don’t want to fix potholes, just leverage them.
PS My Joke:
Highway worker puts up sign “Watch for Potholes”, and reports back to boss, I took care of the pothole problem.
“Mileage-based” means the government needs access to my odometer. No thanks. If on average the Prius-type cars are lighter, don’t they do less road damage? On the other hand, there is that battery to dispose of...
I would use all gas taxes only for roads (I have no problem with walking paths and bike trails) and bridges, not to pay for sex changes, illegals health care etc. I would also get rid of any govt subsidies for hybrid or electric.
In the People's Republic of Pennsyltucky the government already has access to my odometer through the state-mandated annual safety inspection.
The certified inspection mechanic dutifully records the mileage on a ledger along with the tire tread depth and brake linings.
I am required to self-report the mileage at each annual registration renewal.
The data is already there...
Ohio is just emulating Pennsylvania. The highest gas tax in the nation now. 77 cents a gallon for state.
What an idiot
you left out electric cars
True. Large, heavy trucks can cause thousands of times more wear and tear, of the roadway, compared to cars and light trucks. It’s literally an exponential difference.
A lot of folks wearing those yellow things in France have a different opinion.
Each one-cent increase would generate $67 million, with the state keeping 60 percent and 40 percent going to local governments. So the overall take on a 14-cent increase would be $1 billion.
Every little bit, uh, hurts.
Yep.
Was hoping to get a comment from Ohio FR but none showed up here. Wanted to know if DeWine is from Lucas county
If anyone ever thought this a$$clown was anything but a damnable RINO, this should remove any confusion.
NONE of these idiots has ever heard of ‘fiscal restraint’ when it comes to taxpayer monies. They spend like drunken sailors on shore leave.
A toll is actually more fair, but the collection process is more costly. The problem with a fuel tax is that there isn’t a direct correlation between your fuel consumption and the impact you have on the highway system. If you drive a vehicle that gets 30 mpg and I drive one that gets 20 mpg, then I am paying more in fuel taxes but we are using the same roads to the same extent.
To anyone who thinks this money will go where Dewine says it will: Take a damn good look at OH’s budget, especially the Medicaid debt bomb Kasich left as a parting gift, and then get back to me.
