Virginia speaker has 'rightful hesitation' about impeaching Northam, highlighting potential

Washington (CNN)Virginia GOP Speaker Kirk Cox expressed skepticism on Monday that the legislature should try to force Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam out of office, highlighting a potential constitutional impasse the commonwealth could face should Northam decline to step down.

"I think there's a rightful hesitation about removal from office, because obviously you have to consider that to some degree you're overturning an election," Cox said. "I think the constitutional provisions are very specific on the succession of office. It really does call for mental or physical incapacitation. That's what it was meant to do."

Pressure has grown on Northam to resign since revelations about a racist photo on his yearbook page and an ensuing news conference where he admitted to darkening his face to look like Michael Jackson for a dance competition. The governor has said he will not step down, and a source told CNN that Northam argued in a Cabinet meeting on Monday that he would be labeled a "racist for life" if he accepted the wide-ranging calls for him to step down. Cox, who leads the GOP-controlled Virginia House of Delegates, said Monday they had opted to call for his resignation because of the "high standard" required in Virginia for impeachment.

According to Virginia professor A.E. Dick Howard, no Virginia governor has ever been removed from office via impeachment, although the Virginia Constitution provides such a mechanism.

Yep. Let this drag on and also the sexual assault from the Lt Gov. This is what us Virginians’ voted for so let us have it.

Maybe we can run a decent gov next time that will be willing to pull out all the dirt to win. Gilespie was a terrible candidate and should have raised this photo in the final month of the election. But he didnt’.

Which then gives the GOP a shield for several years like Clinton did. exposing the dem hypocrisy does wonders for the GOP.

The “outing” of the allegations against the Lt Gov of VA really do LOOK like it could be a move by Northam to poison the waters so as to dilute the pressure on him to resign - and its absolutely delicious.

A Democrat Party (Its spelled “D”, CNN!) white (accused) racist and a Democrat party black (accused) rapist head the Government of The Commonwealth of Virginia.

I say let them stay there for a full 4 years!! And dredge their pictures out every time the leftist media starts slandering innocent people whose conservative opinions they do not like.

Back in the 80s, almost no costume was out of bounds, including KKK costumes, black face, Nazi, etc... for costume parties. We were "beyond" that kind of concern. Interestingly enough "hooker" type costumes were pretty rare and were considered risque.

I remember in the 80s there was a black singer whose signature was a cowboy buckle with a confederate flag on it.

I had a black girl friend and a confederate flag as a curtain in my kitchen. The only thing she ever said about it was that it needed to be washed because the stove top had made it dirty.

We've gone backwards.

political correctness is killing our culture and restricting our freedoms. It started when sexual harassment laws took over the work force. Only the boss should be prohibited from some actions against subordinates., the rest, women should stand up and deal with informally. They are no better than men but they wanted special protections. Now SH concepts have spread all over the culture like a poison weed.

My sincere wish is, he doesn't resign, and his Lt Guvnah is investigated for his rape of that other success story, back when Fairfax was working for the John Kerry POTUS campaign.

Planned Parenthood has denounced his racism.

Still waiting for Planned Parenthood to denounce Margaret Sanger’s racism.

Absolutely, let him swing in the wind....

I know I’m going to get some real push back when I say this, but it almost seems that everything, I mean everything that has gone on these past 2 1/2 years, maybe 3, starting with Trump entering the race and winning has been heaven sent.

The only thing troubling, is this Mueller investigation. I have no idea how and why it happened. Sessions could and should have punted the thing to Congress just like he did with this guy Huber.

I think Sessions was, sad to say, too weak and incompetent to protect his president.

It's the Democrat's problem. Why should they expect any help from the Republicans?

I know too many people from the ‘hood

You have to understand that a dem could KILL a black person in front of them while calling them the N word and they would still vote for that person.

They are a lost cause.

Don’t need them to win elections anyway.

Technically, Northam has done nothing worthy of impeachment. Being a racist or dressing in blackface long before launching their political career is NOT a crime. Endorsing a law that allows infanticide is NOT a crime (although it ought to be, I suppose).

He’s done nothing illegal, only disgusting. If he endorsed cheating on his spouse, it might be repugnant but it is not a crime.

Unless there is some sort of morals clause to the state oath of office, I don’t find a reason for him to be kicked out. Not that I think a bunch of politicians, many of whom have law degrees and law licenses, will care about what the law says.

You don’t overturn an election because of something that happened 35 years ago. It’s not a relevant topic today. I don’t want a Terry McAuliffe puppet becoming gov, like Fairfax would be, imo. I do know the assembly likes Northam more than they did McAuliffe.
