A Long Island couple has asked a judge to vacate the adoption of two Russian-born children who suffer from serious mental disorders and are now living in state institutions.
In a rare move, Nassau County Surrogates Judge Edward McCarty III will keep his courtroom open for the case, which starts this month, citing public interest in the disturbing facts surrounding the adoption, including the allegation that adoption agencies pulled a bait and switch.
Russian adoptions have made headlines in recent years, with several adopted children dying in the custody of their new American parents, and a Tennessee mother returning her adopted son alone on a plane to Moscow in 2010. Russia banned US couples from adopting its orphans in 2013.
In the case Matter of Adoption of Child A and Child C, the couple asks the court to dissolve the 2008 adoption of purported siblings who were found through Spence-Chapin in New York and Cradle of Hope in Maryland.
The couple claims the agencies described the children, then 6 and 8, as healthy and socially well-adjusted.
But shortly after the adoption, it became clear that the children had serious medical and psychiatric problems, the couple says. The children threatened to kill them many times, the parents claim.

Nikolas does not seem to be an Hispanic name.
Could be RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA though.
Just yesterday they started enforcing stricter regulations on foreign child adoption agencies.
That spelling of Nikolas made me think he was of either Greek or Slavic descent. He’s rather white to be hispanic, though that does happen. The news articles of today are very undisciplined, and have continued to alternate between one spelling and other spellings.
My hunch is that the last name “Cruz” reflects the fact that the adoptive father is of Latin ancestry, not at all uncommon for a Florida resident. The spelling of the name “Nikolas” seems Russian; the fact that he was adopted as an infant; that his parents were about 50 when they adopted him; that his physical features appear Fetal Alcohol Syndrome-related; all lead me to believe the Cruzes adopted both infants from Russia and that at least the shooter's biomom had been drunk on vodka throughout most of her pregnancy.
My cousin adopted two Russian siblings with Fetal Alcohol syndrome. Both of the kids have had real struggles, despite having the best loving parents that gave them every opportunity.
Nikolas looks Russian
He has the look of a Russian orphanage child with FAS/FAE
And his reported behaviors even from childhood are typical of attachment disorder
I would NOT be surprised if this is how he was adopted
Have said this several times
As an adoptive father I have to say the current state of the practice is depressing.
Americans adopt overseas for the same reason men are going MGTOW: to avoid people using the legal environment to destroy their lives and families. But now, when they do, these countries are using them to dump their “broken children.”
It’s heart breaking any way you look at it.
Cruz’s aunt Barbara Kumbatovich, his late mother’s sister, has been quoted in several news stories. Kumbatovich is a Slovenian name.
This is a good post with some very interesting replies. Thanks FRiends!
My heart breaks for anyone who has adopted Russian children. The children desperately need care but adoptee parents have no idea what they are getting into and are not equipped to handle it.
My ex-husband and his wife adopted a girl from the Ukraine with serious physical problems and psychological problems. She has caused them untold heartache and hundreds of thousands of dollars, several stays in mental hospitals and is now an adult, pregnant, on drugs living in a homeless shelter. The baby’s father is in prison.
I believe the heartache and inability to fix her is killing my ex. His wife washed her hands years ago.
That’s sad.
[ Why don’t we know anything about Nikolas Cruz’s birth parents?
Nikolas does not seem to be an Hispanic name.

I had that same thought
[ But now, when they do, these countries are using them to dump their broken children. ]
And we are dumb as hell because we fall for it.
The adoptive dad, Roger Cruz of Long Island, was in his 60’s when they adopted Nik and then 2 yrs. later Zach. Both were infants. Mom -Lynda Cruz was in her 50’s. In Lynda’s obit photo holding infant Nik, he was wearing a type of Russian sailor hat and outfit.
Roger Cruz’s brother-in-law in NY is named Kumbatovic. The boys were reported to be half brothers. They may have soaked in the same distilled Stolichnaya- womb in Russia prior to shipment to the USA.
Russia wins again, and it’s Clinton’s fault. They were both exported during his tenure.
Children Adopted From Russian Orphanages Have High

A new review of studies finds high rates of fetal alcohol syndrome in children who are adopted from Russian and Eastern European orphanages, or who are in foster care ...

Absolutely. I have been around many of these Russian adoptees & their parents and am quite familiar with the adoption process (for those of you who don’t know...it could take years, several trips to Russia & cost $20K or more). Problem was the prospective parents assumed any red flags were due to a language barrier when it was really FAS & severe attachment disorder. Not fixable.
The Russian adoption organizations & orphanages put on quite a “show” to get the kids placed. Got to see first hand over a few years what these children were really like...and a good percentage of them were obviously maladjusted...quite unfortunate. And, most of the parents were overwhelmed trying to deal with it...just like your ex.
First, it doesnt matter what the agency said because the documents on the health of the children WILL say they had numerous problems (foreigners cannot adopt healthy Russian children).
Second, it would set a terrible precedent to allow parents to break adoption contracts and make it harder for all future adopters to prove they are trustworthy with a child.
Third, Im glad adoptions from Russia are halted and pray they stay that way until Russian women stop drinking their way through pregnancy. Fetal Alcohol is incredibly hard on everyone involved and exceedingly expensive financially and socially.
Oh how will mika and joe deal with this?
