My cousin adopted two Russian siblings with Fetal Alcohol syndrome. Both of the kids have had real struggles, despite having the best loving parents that gave them every opportunity.

What's surprising about drinking alcohol while pregnant is that it seems actually to take a great deal of alcohol to hurt an unborn baby — NOT that I am endorsing a pregnant woman's drinking ANY alcohol! — yet, once that threshold is reached, the damage is devastating. Drugs, on the other hand, present a paradox: a baby can be born addicted to something as hardcore as heroin and need to be medically weaned from it, lest he or she suffer excruciating withdrawal...yet, with good may be 100% fine after withdrawal, demonstrating NO side effects from its mother's having been on drugs.

My heart breaks for anyone who has adopted Russian children. The children desperately need care but adoptee parents have no idea what they are getting into and are not equipped to handle it.
My ex-husband and his wife adopted a girl from the Ukraine with serious physical problems and psychological problems. She has caused them untold heartache and hundreds of thousands of dollars, several stays in mental hospitals and is now an adult, pregnant, on drugs living in a homeless shelter. The baby’s father is in prison.
I believe the heartache and inability to fix her is killing my ex. His wife washed her hands years ago.
