Republican tax bill would tie the hands of blue-state governments
Washington Examiner ^ | 12/11/17 | Joseph Lawler

The tax overhaul would raise the taxes of some earners and make it harder for states to do the same. The ultimate effect would be to decrease governments’ ability to raise taxes and increase spending – essentially reining in state budgeteers.

That is an advantage to conservatives who have long sought to advance fiscal conservatism at the state level and who see the state and local tax deduction as a subsidy for high-spending, high-taxing states – that is, blue states.

“This was our point from the start,” said Jonathan Williams, chief economist at the American Legislative Exchange Council, a group that advocates free-market policies for state governments.

“We hope that it engenders more fiscal discipline at the state level in those high-tax states,” Williams said.

The problem is it won’t pressure them. They’re Socialist/Communists and think they should be getting it all anyway. I don’t see this bill changing a thing other than raising taxes on middle class people and pissing them off. Me for example.

So it appears the only thing keeping the Democrats afloat is a federal government subsidy of state and local government.

Yeah, I’m of the mind that it’s just some wishful thinking that will come back to bite Republicans. I’m so old that I can remember when conservatives wanted to lower American’s taxes - now they’ve become the ones who tax American’s taxes. Oy.

What is that old adage? "The power to tax is the power to destroy".

What would taxing taxes likely destroy?

I can only hope it turns out this way.

More likely high income liberals from NYC, Connecticut, Boston, etc will flee to places like Texas and begin voting for higher taxes there. Because it's what they do.

You’re arguing for raising taxes on upper middle class in California. Many are Republicans. When did the GOP and FR become supporters of raising taxes on private citizens? I thought Democrats were the tax-raisers

Let's get this straight. This isn't a direct increase in taxes. It is the elimination of State Taxes as a deduction.

I think as a strategy, it puts more pain into the equation for those who tolerate Liberal state tax policies. Make high taxes hurt those people living in Liberal states, and they will start clamoring to get state taxes under control.

I think this serves the interest of fiscal conservatism in the long run. Making more people hate taxes is the best way to get rid of them.

If our people had made the worst aspects of Obamacare happen right away instead of trying to reduce it's impact, it would already be gone.

So which blue state cesspit do you call home?

Liberals love taxes...for other people. This tax bill requires them to stop hiding their credit card bills in the national debt, and you’re upset because you’ve been a beneficiary of this scam.

If high taxes don’t bother you enough to pull up stakes for a redder state, then you’ll get over some much deserved medicine to your state reps. Maybe it’ll force them to become more fiscally disciplined, or maybe it’ll be enough to get you to move and separate yourself from people who hate you and everything you stand for. Otherwise, I don’t think Republicans are too worried about losing your vote from a politically lost state.

I currently live in CA. That is changing early next year. If I were to stay my taxes would definitely go up rather significantly next year. (My understanding is the current code applies for 2017). If I were still staying in CA, that would hurt, and I feel for conservatives who have no say in the matter here. I even understand why some would feel like they were being abandoned by the so called conservative party.

However, under the present paradigm, CA will never cast electoral votes for a republican anyway, so I guess I also see why the party thinks its time to change the system. Tough love medicine. Maybe after the CA people come to their senses and vote out the socialist who run Sacramento, then the state can fix its tax and spend problem. I know it will be tough living without all those pretty bike paths...

It sounds like a damn good start.

I’m just happy FReepers are admitting it’s the Federal Government’s money and letting us keep it is a subsidy. Because I get to laugh my ass off when they try to argue otherwise with the Liberals who beleive the same thing.

If doubling the standard deduction doesn’t cover the local taxes, it is time to move.

Great if it ties the hand of big spending state governments

Too bad it doesn’t do anything about the hand of the IRS which is still deep in my pocket.

You’re right it won’t pressure them, because the libs will just spin it as a GOPee tax increase and the blue state voters will swallow it hook, line and sinker. Plus most of their voters probably don’t pay taxes anyway. They’ll enjoy seeing those “rich” property owners get screwed.

Don’t worry it’s a brilliant tax plan by Mitch McGoo and Paul Ryano, what could possibly go wrong?

In my opinion this is a huge misstep for Republicans. The outcome won’t be what they hope it will be. They always misjudge the Democrats class warfare and now they’re adding to it.

Remember the .....demographics is destiny....line? Yeah, they’ll never vote out the socialists in Sacto. Conservatives have been replaced with takers. Can’t have a lot of takers without taxing the makers.

Making people pay more taxes isn’t a tax increase, right. You’d make a good Democrat propagandist

No it won't -- it'll merely hold them responsible and accountable for their profligate overspending. Thanks x1stcav.

I may take a tax hit under the new bill but I'm all for putting pressure on high-tax states to face their fiscal realities.

In NJ, state senate President Sweeney said his fellow 'RATS may need to reconsider their plans to raise state income taxes on NJ's wealthier residents.
