New research shows that all blue-eyed people share a common ancestor. This person lived more than 6,000 years ago and carried a genetic mutation that has now spread across the world.
The exact cause remains to be determined but scientists do know that eye color began to change long before recorded history began. The following is a transcript of the video.
All blue-eyed people have one ancestor in common, born around 6,000-10,000 years ago. Blue eyes are caused by a gene mutation. For years, researchers had searched for it on the OCA2 gene. The OCA2 gene determines how much brown pigment is in our eyes. But what they were looking for wasn't there at all.

“Green eyes are beautiful!” My husband’s eyes were green as grass. Mine are brown. Our first child had eyes as gray as smoke.
That’s amazing!
i very much doubt that dating one set of remains gives us a date of origin, it’s merely the earliest known. It wouldn’t be surprising if blue eyes had arisen more than once, or that it was original and that other eye colors arose from later mutations in more than one place. My DNA showed something like 30% Scandinavian origin, but of course the Vikings were, for centuries, all over the British Isles, which is where most of my paper trail leads.
>> Could there have been OTHER mutations at OTHER times? <<
For sure, IMHO. No matter how unlikely the possibility might be, I don’t see how — purely as a matter of logic — that it can be ruled out altogether.
Alternatively, could exactly the same “original” mutation have occurred for another individual?
Same answer.
I like blue, too. My husband has blue eyes.
What I meant by “strong political motive” was that Lula was planning to run for president again, and other politicians probably were trying hard to remove his candidate possibilities for their own ends as the article indicated.
My mom had blue eyes and my dad had brown. Both my sister and I have blue eyes. Three of my children have blue eyes, one has hazel. Their dad has hazel eyes that sometimes look green. It’s interesting that it’s our eyes that can affect our attractiveness. Think of a person wearing dark glasses, who looks attractive, then when the glasses are removed, they may be either more or less attractive, depending on their eyes.
My late husband had intensely light blue eyes. He was red haired, pink skinned, big boned and very muscular. A weak chin and heavy brow, and short intense temper. ..................

Yes, of course, but the division of the chromosomes at fertilization is totally random............
Absoluetly!
Everything about ‘you’ is encoded in your genes.
A mutation can occur anywhere on the DNA molecule.........................
Lula's strong political motive to run again was to try to beat the rap, he was already in hot water over his corruption while he was in office.
There you have it, and at 5’11” and 200 lbs., sparring partner to an Olympic heavy weight wrestling contender at his Big Ten university. Then, with a 32” waist he did look a lot like this cartoon. Now his son is a 6’1” 210 lb. member of Special Forces.
Does that include border collies?
Ok, but what about us hazel-eyed people? Our eyes change color all the time, depending on what we wear I think, all the way from Green to Grey to Blue.
Japheth, whose wife was light skinned and had blue eyes.
Me, too. There must be some connection with the gene for skin tone, too, as most blue-eyed people are rather fair skinned.
