....decision came after Trump, who ran as a master dealmaker, failed to reach agreement with a bloc of rebellious conservatives....

ABC FakeNews editorializing in a report.

Not a setback. A tactic to get the legislation correct.

Earlier today, I listened to Jay Sekulow from the American Center for Law and Justice, (whose conservatism I respect greatly) talk about this healthcare bill.

And he pointed out, that while the bill may not be everything some conservatives may want, it does three major things that would get his vote. (And mine too.)

1. It completely defunds Planned Parenthood.
2. It sends block grants for Medicaid back to the states.
3. It completely eliminates the Obamacare mandate that required everyone to buy insurance.
4. It eliminates the Obamacare taxes, including the retro taxes from January of this year.

As he pointed out, a Reconciliation bill can’t be used for legislative tweaks, but only for budgetary items.

I think some of these congressmen/congresswomen are enjoying the limelight too much and need to take advantage of this great opportunity and vote for this bill.

Could ABC be a little more snarky? I doubt it.

“Set back”.

Says ABC.

LOL!

TRUMP has not even but started to negotiate squat.

Trump has simply let Ryan hang himself, and he himself has continued to say exactly what he has always said from the beginning and what the FREEDOM CAUCUS has been saying. Repeal and replace. Lower premiums. No mandates.

Wah Lah! We have a delay.

I don’t want lipstick on a pig. They’ve had over 7 years to develop a plan and 0bamacare lite is not what got them elected in the first place.

This is not a President Trump failure. It was a most excellent exercise in determining which way the wind is blowing not only in DC, but with The People, IMO.

“Reality” is the best proving ground. President Trump knows the difference between a battle and a skirmish, and what can be gleened from each - so should we.

They want to trash Trump and I don’t think Trump should be in bed with Ezekiel Emanuel, who met with the POTUS and Paul Ryan at the WH the other day.

Zeke was Mr. Obamacare, roundly trashed here at FR and other places over it, now Emanuel is at the WH and announced this week as a “Fox News Contributor”.

Emanuel is a ‘swamp dweller’ if ever there was one.

Ryan has always been and remains the corrupted, corporatist business as usual Uniparty politician.

The Freedom Caucus demands seem to center around this:

The captors in this instance are the members of the House Freedom Caucus, the group of roughly three dozen conservative hard-liners who have tried to bend the GOP bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act toward the right and have now coalesced around one major demand — that the American Health Care Act, as the GOP bill is titled, must repeal more of the ACA’s insurance mandates to truly lower premiums.

That is not a particularly controversial stance among Republicans. Almost all GOP members — conservatives, moderates and otherwise — would like to undo more off the ACA’s “essential health benefits,” a litany of services that insurance plans are required to cover by law. They include things such as emergency-room visits and hospital stays, but they also include mental health, maternity, preventive care and prescription drug coverage that not all people will necessarily utilize.

Democrats argue that without the requirements, many Americans would be forced to buy bare-bones plans that would leave huge gaps in coverage and expose them to severe financial risk. But most Republicans say that requiring insurers to cover all those benefits is a major factor in driving up premiums — and that if consumers want to buy bare-bones plans, they should be able to buy bare-bones plans.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/03/22/what-the-freedom-caucus-wants-in-the-gop-health-bill-and-why-they-arent-getting-it/?utm_term=.cfcf62529843

My understanding, despite what the article says, is that getting rid of these essential benefits is repelling moderates. I just don't see that being popular with the general population while I can see both sides of the argument.

It took the Dems/Libs 80 years to get Obamacare, using every trick legal and illegal to do so. Why is anyone dumping on Trump after 3 months?

This does not hurt Ryan. He’s safe in his district and safe as speaker. Even the Freedom Caucus voted for him.

This is a setback for Trump. And Trump deserves the blame. He promised to get rid of it and he’s not pushing to get rid of it. Total betrayal.
