Stupidity by politicians does have consequences.

You can’t fix stupid....

and I guarantee nobody stopped drinking soda, they are just buying it elsewhere. So loss of jobs, no new tax revenue, no reduction in the actual consumption...mission accomplished.

If Philly shoppers went to the trouble to shop out of area for soda, they probably went ahead and purchased much more in the same shopping run. Look toward more than just the tax receipts on soda to diminish.

Mayor Kenney harshly rebuked reports of coming layoffs..."I didn't think it was possible for the soda industry to be any greedier,"

What a dumbass.
Sure, like "Big Oil" and "Big Pharma", we have "Big Pop"....

And I bet that the fake news in philly will try their best to downplay this and not inform the public of the folly of taxes like this.

That woman who lived until 116 had 3 dr peppers a day for 60 years.

That’s nearly 70,000.

But I think it’s what killed her.

My guess is people aren't consuming less. They're moving their purchases out to the suburbs unaffected by the tax. And maybe some enterprising citizens with large trunk automobiles are stocking up and bringing the bubbly nectar back to the city to sell al fresco. Creating criminals and opportunities for black market criminality is probably what government, any government, is best at.

The power to tax is the power to destroy.

In this case it is destroying a market in one area, but opening a market in another. Pretty soon, rather then rescind the tax they will create a SODA POLICE and demand that any soda consumed within city limits have a tax stamp attached.

Then they will begin to go after smugglers.

Next thing you know there will be a black market in sodas.

And in the end they will spend more in enforcement then they get in revenue.

It was a nice touch for them to claim it was for the children. I am afraid that card has expired.

I drink one, maybe two sodas a month. I drink none of the flavored water. I do drink plain bottled water but not as much as I used to. It’s all too expensive. And the sodas are toxic. When I drink one now I really notice it.... feel yucky for an hour or two.

They’re soon going to have to charge way more than that to make up for the loss of federal funds to support illegal alien criminals.

Mayor Kenney harshly rebuked reports of coming layoffs late Tuesday night. "I didn't think it was possible for the soda industry to be any greedier," Kenney said in an emailed statement. “…They are so committed to stopping this tax from spreading to other cities, that they are not only passing the tax they should be paying onto their customer, they are actually willing to threaten working men and women's jobs rather than marginally reduce their seven figure bonuses."

THIS GUY IS A LUNATIC!...................

Great job Philly - way to plug a budget shortfall! Generate revenue for surrounding cities, cost people their jobs, etc.

Genius I tell ya!

If the consumer wants soda or sweetened beverage than they go to the nearest town and stock up.

I lived in Oregon for 2 years and they had the bottle bill which levied a 5 cent deposit on cans and bottles of beer and soda. I would buy my products at Costco in Washington state and avoid the surcharge and then I would take the empties to the stores in Oregon and get my “refund” on the deposit.

$3.28 per 10 pack buys enough fuel or bus fare to make the trip out of the city and back. New Jersey is loving this.
