House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) has made clear he doesn't agree with a proposal put forward by Donald Trump -- whom Ryan has endorsed -- to ban Muslim immigration into the United States, but in an interview with the Huffington Post Thursday, Ryan floated taking a President Trump to court if he tried to implement such a ban or some of his other controversial proposals unilaterally.
I would sue any president that exceeds his or her powers, Ryan said in a back-and-forth about Trump's claims that he could implement a Muslim ban or build a Mexican border wall without congressional approval.
Ryan said he wasn't sure of the "legal question" of whether Trump could institute a Muslim ban on his own as president.
Thats a legal question that theres a good debate about, he said, citing the 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act.
"On the broader question, are we going to exert our Article I powers and reclaim this Article I power no matter who the president is? Absolutely," Ryan said. He also said he discussed the limits of the executive power with Trump.
In the interview, Ryan said his endorsement of real estate mogul did not give Trump a blank check, and that he was still trying to achieve "real unity" between the presumptive nominee and his caucus.

Ryan is a good works Catholic socially liberal. His excuse today for being soft on Islam was his own religion he said
He needs to go
The cumulative damage from the RINOs and GOPE working with the media is taking a toll
“Wheres he been for the past 8 years?”
Well the past 4 he has been kissing Romney’s Azz! That’s all you need to know to figure out what he’s doing. He’s doing Romney’s backstabbing for Romney. It’s no wonder Palin is supporting Hehlen.
Enough is Enough. Trump should end his relationship with Ryan and do so in a very public and typical Trump kind of way.
Trump needs to first publicly remove Ryan from being Chairman of the Republican Convention. Don’t need this backstabber presiding over the convention.
Then Trump needs to publicly and loudly call for Ryan to either resign immediately as Speaker of the House or demand his congressional allies file a discharge petition to remove Ryan as Speaker immediately. Trump can turn up the public heat on enough GOP reps to get them to sign the petition.
Lastly, Trump should travel to Wisconsin and publicly endorse Ryan’s primary opponent, Paul Nehlen at a campaign event.
There aren’t any Republicans in positions of power. Only Democrats pretending to be Republicans. It’s a “Duh” situation. Special place in Hades for all of them. As long as they provide the illusion of choice, they can keep turning up the heat in the pot...And I grew tired of being a cooked frog a long time ago. Ryan can eat cowpies and run around with my old shite-eating dog...
I’m Catholic, and Ryan is using that as an excuse to act like a Democrat.
Badgers are always making threats and still apologizing for Joe McCarthy.
Glad to see a Badger on the offensive. I believe Ryan is worse than Boehner, because Boehner had no ambition beyond Speaker.
Was thinking the same thing how different a debate with Trump would have been. First off, after about the third time getting cut off, Trump would say, “Excuse me, excuse me. I get to talk, then you get to talk.” Then secondly he’d say, “Why are you laughing? YOu have 90,000,000 people off of work, and immigration problem, mired in wars. What’s so funny Biden?”
If Biden would continued to interrupt he’d make him look foolish. “Is there some reason why you can’t shut up while I’m talking?”
Ryan and McConnell are both assholes.
Time for another House election for Speaker of the House. Trump should demand it or exercise his veto power on anything that Ryan pushes. Who Blinks First?
Great post, nitzy!
Paul rino must take donation from Muslim as Clinton.
You said that better than I
Is he a true misguided good works believer or pandering?
I read a piece on him years ago whereby he is surrounded by libs personally
So was Cantor. Polling showed Cantor was up by 35% if I remember correctly...
“I would sue any president that exceeds his or her powers, Ryan said”
Sure. . . .prove it, prove it NOW.
Gosh. Is he saying that as speaker he will block a bill presented to the House and Senate for passage, that calls for a temporary halt on immigration from Muslim countries that are involved in terrorism? Let him say so, then, and then get on with his primary.
I assume the a**hole means if Trump does it by executive order. But who knows? Trump has GOT to win.
That’s the only scenario he discusses, and then he says he’d oppose it as an abuse of power. So let’s say he doesn’t usurp any unconstitutional prerogatives. He doesn’t say that he would oppose an immigration control bill on the merits, but I suspect he would.
This BS is not helpful. The GOP and Trump should be playing nice with each other - or risk losing the election, SCOTUS, and the coming generation to the Clinton dynasty.
Unfortunately, neither side here is taking the higher ground - and the chaos is also reflected in the food fights over the renovation funds, donor outreach, etc. BTW, I think Mr. Trump needs the GOP organization especially because he’s made little efforts to get his own ground game going.
Obama proved that translating enthusiasm into electoral successes - including down ticket candidates - requires both a well-oiled organization and disciplined messaging. I fear we are getting neither from Trump, Ryan, etc.
Of course, my best scenario is - this is a different type of presidential election and none of the above matters.
Bears repeating.
Our backs are against the wall. And THESE treacherous arsonists of American liberty are pretending to be principled??
THESE traitors led by Paul Ryan would be firing AT the American forces on the beach at Normandy from the sea. Damn them!
