Muhammad Ali's birthplace of Louisville, Kentucky, is paying tribute Saturday to the late boxing legend, who died Friday in Arizona at 74.
At a ceremony at the city's Metro Hall, Mayor Greg Fischer said flags on government buildings would remain at half-staff until Ali has been laid to rest.

Sure, he was a great fighter, but you don’t lower The Stars and Stripes for a draft-dodger.
Lord help us...the flag at half-mast for a draft-dodger.
Just wait till Obama starts his mourning. It will be like nothing else.

And a Mooslim.
My family knew this fellow well. My uncle, Angelo Dundee, was his trainer. “Cassius Clay” was how we knew him. We never quite understood what the attraction was to Islam. He did so well in this country; made a lot of money. He was a better boxer than a man.
My flag will continue to fly at full mast.
Mast; on a ship.
Staff; on land.
He didn't "dodge" the draft. He stood on principle and paid the price. Even if you disagree with his decision, you have to respect the fact that he stood on principle and didn't back away from the fight that lay ahead. He was a lot more principled that those who ran to Canada to await a pardon from Jimmy Carter.
That being said, the American flag should not have been lowered to half staff. Maybe the city flag, if they have one.
I am probably going to get attacked for this, but having the flags at half mast for a person found guilty of draft evasion, because he wouldn’t fight the white man’s war thus refusing to join the thousands that gave their all for the country, some still suffering today, should not have a flag lowered for him. I wasn’t aware being a criminal is grounds for recognition only awarded to heroes of this country. And the main reason he didn’t go to jail was that the federal and state governments were afraid of the backlash. Only his notoriety kept him out. And he is receiving the honor the same as out fallen heroes?
red
The “principle” he stood on was that he would only go to war for Elijah Mohammed, leader of the Black Muslims. And not go to war for his country.
Even if that is genuine, and not just a pretext, it is still a revolting “principle.”
He wouldn’t have seen a minute of combat. The army wanted him to be a sideshow, boxing soldiers on R&R etc...
He stood his ground and paid a price. Not saying he was right or wrong, but he didn’t dodge the draft. He was stripped of his belts and was in and out of jail in the years he was most formidable.
Whatever. RIP.
Or a raving drug addict
I responded to you because I more or less agreed. Don’t take it the wrong way.
The army "officially" denied that. The official position was that he would be treated like any other recruit. IOW, he was "officially" being drafted as cannon fodder for LBJ.
I have more resect for Jimi Hendrix than I do for Cassius Clay.
No kidding.
