PASTOR PATRINELL WRIGHT was just a 20-year-old country girl from Carthage, Texas, who didnt know what she was getting into when she migrated to Seattle in 1964.
She grew up one of seven children in the Walnut Grove community, to be exact, a nearby farming enclave designated for blacks. Thats how it was in Southern towns back then. If you were black, you knew where you belonged, and it sure wasnt around white people, unless you happened to be working for them.
Seattle had its own form of segregation, with blacks clustered mainly in the citys Central District because of racist lending practices and whites-only covenants in housing subdivisions in Shoreline, Ballard, Green Lake, Queen Anne, Magnolia, White Center, Bellevue and beyond.
Wright boarded a Continental Trailways coach and set off by herself on the first cross-country bus ride shed ever taken. But the price of that three-and-a-half-day bus ride to Seattle cost a lot more than what she paid for her ticket.
She was forced to take a seat at the back of the bus, on a bench barely suitable for sitting, the only black passenger on a coach overloaded with hate.
I was called every name in the book, except Child of God, Wright says while reminiscing at her home in the Central District, where she has lived for 48 years.
The bus lavatory and the restrooms at bus stations along the way were for whites only, too. Blacks used unisex outhouses behind the stations.

I went to Manual Arts High is Los Angeles in the 80’s. It was overwhelmingly black back then. Now, it’s overwhelmingly Hispanic. This happens everywhere. Immigration (legal and illegal) is changing the face of most big cities in America.
During WWII blacks moved to the NW to work in the factories and shipyards..notably Portland.
Seattle is welcome to some of ours.
No coincidence that FBI stats reveal that Tukwila is now the most dangerous city in America.
What an odd article.
This article is essentially a complaint about a neighborhood that is being renewed, desegregating with the property values going up, lamenting that the neighborhood is becoming multi-racial (too white?) and losing its sense of community.
Hmm, where have I heard this before? Oh yea, back in the ‘70s when the coin of the realm was flipped onto the other side. Welcome to the bad old days, CD, flipped 180 degrees around.
I was born in Tacoma, lived 50 years in the Puget Sound area...what you say is true, most blacks moved there because of Fort Lewis and McChord...it’s a friendly area, no latent bigotry of any kind. But deeply socialist, and the blacks either self-selected or were herded by real estate into certain areas within cities. It is now a ultra-green area, development of any kind is discouraged...just look at the awful roads...
“Why is it that blacks still lag far behind Asians, people from India, and pretty much everyone else?”
Could it be “The Bell Curve”?
Other than Portland, Seattle and Tacoma...there’s no other minority presence in the NW. Go drive around. When you do bump into a black guy....he’s usually associated with the Army or retired from the Army. The hundred towns around those three urban centers? Mostly non-black, and a growing Latino or Asian influence.
Thy paint today as the 1940s.
Thismis all to stir up blacks to riot and vote democrat. Ironic since democrats are the klan party and the segregation party.
In a class of 25 you would expect on average 3 black kids. That’s it if the entire country had a nearly perfect distribution of blacks. Very few blacks I know will tolerate living in an area with less than 30% black. Which means whole swaths of America have very few black people and it’s not because they are racists. I have been in plenty of those communities all across the country and generally speaking the few blacks in those places have celebrity status.
I grew up being a speck of pepper in a sea of salt during the fifties and sixties. I never thought of myself as different, until other people forced me to focus my attention on the color of my skin.
In my childhood, I was taught that family is 1st, country is 2nd, and race is a distant 3rd. That is still my orientation to this very day, though political orientation has now superseded race as number 3.
At the core of my being, I’m just a simple American boy.

Why is it domestic black lag so far behind immigrant blacks. I have black friends from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ivory Coast who came here, graduated college, became professionals and some became land lords. They all immigrated here with nothing but the clothes on their back.
It is a tragedy that black ghetto culture so adamantly rejects education and self-improvement outside of gang related drug sales. I have no clue how to solve this nor do I see it ever being solved. It is just going to go on forever and ever.
Liberals hate gentrification. They like ghettos to remain in place and even to expand.
Liberalism is a mental disorder.
Well....the awful roads come from zero state income tax, and the public has to make it off property and a sales tax. After being stationed there in 1980....I got smart and ID’ed the state as my home state, and for the remainder of my career....never paid any state income tax.
I admit....when you drive around the regions outside of Seattle and Tacoma....it just gets worse. When you get east of Mount Rainer...I wouldn’t be driving on any county or state road more than 45-mph (at least by what I observed in 1980).
My grandfather went to Manual Arts in the 1930’s, and I believe it was mostly white/Jewish then.
Heh...I went to Nevada...no state income tax either...
Oh, dude!
Are the ChiComs racist or what?
