Really interesting stuff from National Review's Eliana Johnson, whose latest campaign dispatch sheds light on just how close Newt Gingrich has become with the presumptive Republican nominee -- and how hard the former House Speaker is said to be lobbying behind the scenes for a spot on the ticket. Are you ready for Trump/Gingrich 2016, America?
Gingrich has, in effect, launched his own campaign to secure the nomination. I think Newt is lobbying to be the vice president, and I think their people are paying a lot of attention to him, says Ed Rollins, a Republican operative and former Gingrich staffer now working for a super PAC supporting Trumps candidacy.*snip*
Gingrich has a reputation for insinuating himself into campaigns by firing off dozens of e-mails brimming with ideas that range from brilliant to insane. While its a quality that has irritated previous presidential candidates such as John McCain and Mitt Romney, sources say that Trump has come to value the former speakers opinions. They talk every day, says a source familiar with the relationship, who claims that Gingrich e-mails Trump, campaign chairman Paul Manafort, and campaign manager Corey Lewandowski countless times a day....Gingrichs influence within Trump World is widespread. Inside Trumps newly established campaign offices in Washington, D.C., his fingerprints are everywhere. Right from the minute I joined we were told that Newt will have his hand in every major policy effort, says one Trump aide. So one of the things I do when Im researching or writing anything, in addition to looking at what Trump has said about anything, I look at what Newt has said.

You are correct...
Newt is one of the best. If he can help defeat the Clinton crime family, count me in.
“If Trump wants him, thats good enough for me.”
Me too.
I don’t care about his age. Everyone acts like the VP spot guarantees you POTUS after 8 years - actually, it’s quite rare.
Anyway, Newt is great - a real conservative. I think he’s one of the few people whose opinions Trump would actually respect.
My only concern about the VP pick is not a concern about Newt, but about any choice: there is something magical and inexplicable about how Trump can appeal to so many types, and can be immune to so many lines of attack. So how will his VP pick affect that? I don’t know. I don’t think anyone knows.
For that reason, I wish he could just not pick a running mate - just get elected, then pick a VP!
“Like Reagan, its fairly obvious at this point Trump will pick someone (or maybe be forced to pick someone) tied into the current political structure to be his VP.”
Trump may want to do it simply to avoid getting overrun if he is elected. But why not select a committed conservative/constitutionalist, someone without all the baggage that Gingrich brings? Pick someone who would be a plausible choice for President. I am in favor of someone like Rand Paul, but in many ways I would prefer that Paul remain in the Senate for now. Why not Jeff Sessions?
It’s a “great addition” only if you want Hillary to win.
Newt's days of pulling Conservatives to his side are well behind him. That said, I'm sure Newt could out-debate anyone on the Dem side at the VP debate.
I knew folks who wanted Newt last time just because they wanted a debate between Newt and 0bama, and the only way that would happen is if he were the nominee.
YES YES YES ... HE is the reason the 1990’s was an economic success, the Reagan tax cuts had kicked in, Clinton was about to “spend” the harvest and Gingrich shut down the government twice and brought Clinton into line. He is a perfect match for Mr. Trump as they go after making America Great again! Read your history, this guy was a winner then and he will be again. The BS you “hear” all comes from the Clinton Left that hated his guts for obvious reasons. Hillary Care DIED with the 104th congress! Didn’t have a chance.
worst idea ever
I like him. I don’t know if it would be the absolute best choice, but it certainly wouldn’t be a mistake.
I’m not privy to the best and latest inside information, but The Donald surely is. I will trust his judgement.
When Newt was House Speaker, He's the guy who got Bill Clinton to move to the center and cut welfare spending.
Keep in mind... a ham sandwich would be better than Biden.
Nooooo!!! He needs to be front and center as a Trump spokesman! Not hampered with funerals and such.
Mixed feelings. I like and respect Newt and think he’s be great, but the long-term dynamics may not be in our best interests. he surely has a place on Trump’s staff though.
He’d be my first choice......not sure he’ll help the Trump ticket in the election though......
“Are You Ready To Throw Away A Landslide?”
My thoughts exactly. There are so many reasons, morally and politically not to pick a degenerate like Gingrich.
Trump needs to balance with someone who is strong on the conservative/Constitution side, but also softer spoken. Someone who has been married only once, for a long time, and who hasn’t been invited to nor attended the Bohemian Grove.
And I agree with your tagline.
What are you talking about?
He can be the first 4 and another the second 4.
Here we go again, I see and far too damned many FR lofos are all for this. I guess they all want a PRESIDENT HILLARY.
It’s HOW Newtie divorced his first two wives and yes, it does nullify Trump’s attack on Slick Willie! Also, Hillary and her team are robotic and have already destroyed Newtie ( with his help ) before. They would use that same game plan to bring down Trump, if Newtie was the VEEP choice.
Never Rand; he adds less than noting to the ticket.
