Donald Trumps damage to the Republican Party, although already extensive, has barely begun. Republican quislings will multiply, slinking into support of the most anti-conservative presidential aspirant in their partys history. These collaborationists will render themselves ineligible to participate in the partys reconstruction.
Ted Cruzs announcement of his preferred running mate has enhanced the nomination process by giving voters pertinent information. They already know the only important thing about Trumps choice: His running mate will be unqualified for high office because he or she will think Trump is qualified.
Hillary Clintons optimal running mate might be Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, a pro-labor populist whose selection would be balm for the bruised feelings of Bernie Sanderss legions. Running mates rarely matter as electoral factors: In 2000, Al Gore got 43.2 percent of the North Carolina vote. In 2004, John Kerry, trying to improve upon Gores total there, ran with North Carolina Sen. John Edwards but received 43.6 percent. If, however, Brown were to help deliver Ohio for Clinton, the Republican path to 270 electoral votes would be narrower than a needles eye. [SNIP]
Trump would be the most unpopular nominee ever, unable to even come close to Mitt Romneys insufficient support among women, minorities and young people. In losing disastrously, Trump probably would create down-ballot carnage sufficient to end even Republican control of the House. Ticket splitting is becoming rare in polarized America: In 2012, only 5.7 percent of voters supported a presidential candidate and a congressional candidate of opposite parties.

YES!
“So, a person who is for:
A robust national defense
Securing our borders
Trade deals that ACTUALLY benefit the workers if this country
Energy independence
Defending the 2nd Amendment
Reducing regulations
Eliminating unnecessary government agencies and departments
Balancing our budget
Taking care of veterans
Defending and backing our friends
Avoiding unnecessary foreign entanglements
and opposing our enemies
is not conservative.
Oh, I see. This isnt REALLY about who is conservative or not, it is about a has-been trying to remain relevant, keeping his paycheck coming and continuing to get invited to the right parties where a bunch of like-minded sycophants will keep reminding said has-been how brilliant and nuanced he is.
Yeah, screw that noise, I want my country back!”
Excellent post and summary. I agree completely.
Hopefully others will figure this out soon also.
As I recall, Will didn’t think Trump would file/disclose/make it past August, etc...
Is George Will saying, “the voters have escaped the reservation”?
Not if we crack down on illegals, close the border and severely curtail legal immigration. "Demographic change" is a euphemism for "Democrats importing more voters." It's not inevitable. It's a policy of our enemies. It can and will be stopped.
in CA only criminals are allowed to have guns.
I love how he mentions that only 5.7% of the voters split the ticket when voting, but yet his entire premise of this article is to not vote for Trump and then split the ticket and vote for the down-ballots.
These folks are absolutely becoming unhinged...
I’ve never seen them go after Obama and his liberal brigands like this!
Hey, Obama was a friend. Trump is a threat to our rice bowl. See the difference rube? /s
“Crap sandwich”
Well, that’s a pretty damned good description of George Will himself.
>>Is George Will saying, the voters have escaped the reservation?<<
ah hah... i think so.... lol..
It would be a luxury to have the old conservative vs. liberal concerns.
The reality is this is now American nationalism vs. global, world government interests. It’s about whether we are a country, or just province in the global system.
If Trump ain’t on the ticket, I won’t vote for any of the down ballots either.
I will write in Trump and the rest can pound sand.
LOL.
So Hillary getting reelected (sic) would somehow be less damaging? The GOP has survived two Bushes, only one of whom was conservative. What the country needs is someone who isn’t Hillary, not a “true conservative”.
Think how different that would be if, even for a moment, the people in the car pulled a pistol out of the glove compartment.
The crowd would have fled.
I see you joined (under your current posting name) on February 6, 2014. That means you weren't here for the 2012 or 2008 Republican primary seasons. They were both as bad or worse than this one, certainly in terms of sheer number of posters who dropped off or were banned. Of course, the real concern is that each one of these extended food-fights could be the one that drops participation below critical mass. That would be a shame, for the site and for us. When this cycle is over, most of the people who read this site will vote for the Republican candidate, regardless of who it is. Unfortunate that these primary cycles turn out so rough on relationships with people we should agree with.
One other thought - part of the reason this thread has so many posts is because 2 posters have engaged in a flame war. The one guy talks about being an important part of the Republican party for a long time. Another way of saying that is, he's part of the problem that led to candidates like Trump and Cruz getting large vote totals, because of the perceived outsider status. I read all of the posts on this thread, because sometimes I start a book or a movie and realize that I don't like all that much, but hey I got this far, I might as well finish. I saw your post 265 (? I think) and just felt compelled to comment.
Will can only mean one of two things.
1) Go all in for Hillary
2) Make SURE Trump never walks through the white house door.
Don’t think these people are going to go easily. Lots of power and they don’t want to lose it.
He’s delusional.
