Donald Trumps damage to the Republican Party, although already extensive, has barely begun. Republican quislings will multiply, slinking into support of the most anti-conservative presidential aspirant in their partys history. These collaborationists will render themselves ineligible to participate in the partys reconstruction.
Ted Cruzs announcement of his preferred running mate has enhanced the nomination process by giving voters pertinent information. They already know the only important thing about Trumps choice: His running mate will be unqualified for high office because he or she will think Trump is qualified.
Hillary Clintons optimal running mate might be Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio, a pro-labor populist whose selection would be balm for the bruised feelings of Bernie Sanderss legions. Running mates rarely matter as electoral factors: In 2000, Al Gore got 43.2 percent of the North Carolina vote. In 2004, John Kerry, trying to improve upon Gores total there, ran with North Carolina Sen. John Edwards but received 43.6 percent. If, however, Brown were to help deliver Ohio for Clinton, the Republican path to 270 electoral votes would be narrower than a needles eye. [SNIP]
Trump would be the most unpopular nominee ever, unable to even come close to Mitt Romneys insufficient support among women, minorities and young people. In losing disastrously, Trump probably would create down-ballot carnage sufficient to end even Republican control of the House. Ticket splitting is becoming rare in polarized America: In 2012, only 5.7 percent of voters supported a presidential candidate and a congressional candidate of opposite parties.

Let's start with the fact that I don't particularly like Trump and I agree with Will that he is not a conservative (he espouses some recently acquired conservative ideas, but he is far from a Constitutional conservative). With that said, if the alternative is Hillary (or any Demoncrat likely to get the nomination if she is unable to run), I will support Trump. The alternative of Dems running the country for another 4 years is.......well, words fail me.
If even the nomination of Trump will destroy the GOP as it exists today, I don’t see a downside.
I agree. Those in power now don’t want to lose all their perks. And Trump will stop all the corruption.
Kristol is Jewish. Saudi Arabia might be interesting for him.
Don’t waste your breath beernoser. I’m a Trump supporter but something has happened here at FR that leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. I won’t call you names or disparage you. In fact I do agree with you. Civil discourse is no longer found within these forums. Long time FReepers have been banned, comments are being screened, in short if you aren’t towing the line straight down the path you are targeted, belittled and marginalized. It has become a pack mentality around here. This behavior has been sanctioned, condoned and supported.
Thank you for sharing your posts, while I don’t agree with some of your comments I’ll still pull the lever for Trump. However I think many here are in for a rude awakening come election time (including me). Whether he wins or not he has certainly without question damaged the conservative brand. Reagan was very effective at countering insults and direct attacks. He did that with kindness as did his supporters. Today you are called an idiot by both the cantidate himself and his supporters.
You are not an idiot but insightful. I do hope you cooelesce behind the catidate Trump come election time
Bingo!
(off with their heads!)
Not constructive to any level of dialogue. What does him being Jewish have to do with anything of relevance? And you wonder why Trump supporters including me are labeled bigots?
Shall we add to that list antisemetic as well?
So, a person who is for:
A robust national defense
Securing our borders
Trade deals that ACTUALLY benefit the workers if this country
Energy independence
Defending the 2nd Amendment
Reducing regulations
Eliminating unnecessary government agencies and departments
Balancing our budget
Taking care of veterans
Defending and backing our friends
Avoiding unnecessary foreign entanglements
and opposing our enemies
is not conservative.
Oh, I see. This isn’t REALLY about who is conservative or not, it is about a has-been trying to remain relevant, keeping his paycheck coming and continuing to get invited to the “right” parties where a bunch of like-minded sycophants will keep reminding said has-been how brilliant and nuanced he is.
Yeah, screw that noise, I want my country back!
George Will has become so despised in this household, I refuse to watch him make any comments at all. Hence—no longer watch Fox Sunday News, which used to be rather interesting. Juan Williams also drives me nuts. His supply of Kool Aid is endless, it seems.
My sanity means more than that to me.
Last I heard Trump has already beat Romney’s and McCain’s record of votes. Based on that alone, surely Romney and McCain would have been an even bigger threat to the party than Donald Trump is today.
I need to go and Google: “George Will: If Romney is nominated, the GOP must keep him out of the White House”
and
“George Will: If McCain is nominated, the GOP must keep him out of the White House”.
Hmmm... I could only find: 11/4/2012 “George Will predicts 321-217 Romney landslide”
Is Will suggesting assassination? I only wish he had this much passion for the community-organizer Obama. But then, of course, Mr. Trump’s suits often look quite rumpled compared to O’s creased slacks.
George Will doesn’t even know how to suggest a different way to comb his toupee, let alone how to suggest an assassination, lol
That is why I will never, ever put a Trump sticker on my truck. I don’t want some deranged leftist to key it or worse.
" Form 1020002200200 to keep Trump out of the White House, as you requested."
Along with their pal Lowry.
“Trump has the votes, but he must defeat the party who would deny the will of the voters”.
Exactly. You saved me the trouble of rebutting beernoser’s lecture.
Being Jewish in Saudi Arabia is dangerous. THat was my point. Why do you tink that point is bigoted? Do you follow my posts? I am very Pro-Israel. I have Jewish relatives, I just think Kristol is out of his mind.
if anyone damaged the republican party it was not donald trump ,it was the gop pricks....
+1
