Donald Trump Just Made It Impossible For Ted Cruz To Clinch The GOP Nomination
Washington Post ^ | 04/21/2016 | Philip Bump

Posted on 04/19/2016 11:12:11 PM PDT by goldstategop

How bad was Cruz’s night? He’s losing to Ben Carson in some places — a guy who hasn’t been in the race in weeks.

Cruz can still win the nomination on the first convention ballot, mind you, but he needs to win about 88.5 percent of the outstanding delegates, bound or unbound, per Daniel Nichanian’s excellent calculations. That's not likely to happen either.

Trump isn’t the only big winner tonight! Congratulations to John Kasich, who will almost certainly end up with his first delegate in more than a month. Can Kasich pull off a come-from-behind victory? No. The end.

Cruz has ZERO appeal to anyone outside a very narrow niche.

He has not been vetted - ripped apart by the media, yet.

He has no cross-over appeal and we’d lose in a landslide.

Trump won’t take CA.

If anything it will be split.
We are headed to the convention floor.

"He may be a rat, but I'm not going to copulate with him" - Ted Cruz, about Roger Stone.

Maybe Mickey is afraid *he's* the one, and that's why he's looking so frantically for the exit!

when was the last time a republican candidate won WI?

4 just 4 states cruz has won where people actually vote for their candidate, one of which is his own state with less than 50%.
Never won a county in FL, VA came third yet again last night, how many times has he come third.

I guess he should just drop out then; after all, 72% of Republican voters don’t want him to be the nominee.

Absolutely - Cruz needs to do the right thing. The National polls are similar to what happened in NY and far more would vote for trump than for Cruz.

FL for a start, I am here and trust me he can win this state. VA where he had a good showing , but it would be close.

Cruz on the other hand looses both states thus Clinton wins.

No one is mathematically eliminated from winning the nomination, all but Trump simply cannot do it on the first ballot. The whole game is to make sure no candidate wins on the first ballot. This mathematically eliminated stuff means nothing.

My wife on the other hand is a Conservative Voter that is not ready to vote for either CRUZ or Trump...she may write in Mickey Mouse for President of the United States! She has great concern for our nation but has not yet found a candidate worthy of her vote.

LOL

Reminds me of the man who was so patriotic he wanted to serve his country in the military like his forefathers; he thought no branch of the Armed Forces was worthy of him so he formed his own.

Lincoln won on the third ballot.

Lincoln was a POS and Cruz won't win A SINGLE ballot. He's done for this election cycle.

Thanks for playing but he and his supporters are nothing more than disruptive trolls from this point forward.

Exactly. The American men we lost in the Civil War were good solid stock and we pay the price for their deaths today.

They were the backbone of this country. Think of how many generations of additional fine American men & women they would have begot. These would have been families that share the hard work ethic, traditions, intellect, and values that built this country and made it great.

The many Millions of their offspring -English, Irish, German, Scottish, French, European, etc. would have shaped the face of this nation quite differently than what we have today. Our rulers would not have been supportive of flooding our country with cheap labor because we would have had plenty of people here to work and support Social Security for retirees.

And slavery would have gone by the wayside within about the same timeframe just as it did in all the other South American and European countries. Other countries had many more slaves than the USA and were able to make all men free without an internal war. And they outlawed slavery without all the animosity, hatred and distorted rhetoric that we pay the price for today.

Thanks to Lincoln, the federal government diluted the autonomy of the individual states and seized more power for itself. DC expanded its control and gave itself rights it was never intended to hold. And we pay the price for this every single day.

“He (Cruz)can’t understand how he can be beat by STUPID PEOPLE.”

From everything I’ve seen, the rumors of Cruz’ “brilliance” are greatly exaggerated.

The only situations where he has “shined” were when he’s had plenty of time to do research (or have others do it for him), memorize and/or read. Thinking on his feet is not his strong suit.

Nonsense. Cruz should drop out TODAY, since he no longer has a chance of winning it straight up. If he did, this would be OVER. By staying in, unless Trump can somehow hit the magic number, Cruz insures a contested convention and will attempt to deny the actual voters their choice. That’s not what I call doing no harm.

Nonsense. If Cruz and Trump were swapped, I would want Trump to stay in, just as I want Cruz to stay now. [And I'd vote Cruz in a week to give the best chance for a first ballot decision, just as I'll actually be voting Trump in a week for that reason. Both are good choices, but the important things are (1) avoid a second ballot if possible, and (2) have as many anti-Amnesty, anti-establishment delegates on the floor as possible.]

In the real world, I want Cruz to stay in for as long as Kasich does. The conversation changes when there are only two candidates left, and I do not want to risk that dynamic with Kasich. The best situation for a candidate like Trump is obviously being the only one left, but three candidates left is the second best situation - far better than having two left or a large field. Trump and I both agree with Cruz on the most important issues for the next eight years, while Kasich is on the other side for almost every key issue.

Kasich would get more delegates without Cruz in the race. Without Cruz, the convention would therefore have more delegates who are pro-establishment, pro-Amnesty, and more willing to circumvent the primaries. If the convention is 80% Cruz and Trump delegates, we have a much better chance that at least 50% of them will resist establishment efforts to derail the convention and nominate a "white knight".

I understand what you’re saying, but if Cruz did the honorable thing, dropped out, and asked his delegates to support Trump how would that NOT utterly block Kasich and the GOP-e?
