GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz said Tuesday that Donald Trump was engaging in a "pre-emptive surrender" to Islamic terror by calling for a "withdrawal" from NATO on the eve of the Brussels terror attacks.
On Monday, Trump told CNN that the U.S. should greatly reduce its support of NATO.
"It's too much and frankly it's a different world than it was when we originally conceived of the idea," Trump said of the US-European security alliance.
Cruz said he found it "striking" that the terror attacks occurred on the day after his rival candidate Donald Trump called for reducing the U.S. role NATO.
"We see Brussels where NATO is headquartered as the subject of a radical Islamic terrorist attack," Cruz said in a press conference from Washington D.C.
"Donald Trump is wrong that America should withdraw from the world and abandon our allies. Donald Trump is wrong that America should retreat from Europe, retreat from NATO, hand Vladimir Putin a major victory, and while's he's at it, hand ISIS a major victory."

NATO is doing absolutely zero in fighting Islamists, including ISIS.
In fact given that most of its members are Islam sympathizers and even includes one, Turkey, who is Islamist, it will never be effective at fighting Islam.
I’m afraid Cruz misfires again.
We need a brand new organization to fight this war. NATO is a dinosaur.
Cruz actually did it yesterday. Why is it Trump supporters can never look at facts? If so they would see what we see. You have to read the transcript of DT’s WA Post meeting from yesterday.
DesperaTED
It’s funny how Cruz complains about Trumps tone
If anything, NATO has allowed European leaders to be total jerks about saving themselves.
Perhaps Cruz is neither old enough nor culturally aware enough to know about times when Europe needed time to rebuild. He certainly doesn't have a clue about the kind of strong "got your back" kind of leadership we needed today.
I think he believes he is being slick. It definitely does not come off as principled or distinguished.
YOU CAN JUDGE A MAN BY HIS SUPPORTERS
I’ll be darned..
He can talk right around the real issue just like a Bush or a Clinton.
Coming from a die-hard KGB Putin supporter such as yourself, I couldn't give a rat's you-know-what what you say, about anything.
It may be Ted’s mouth moving, but Bill Kristol, Yeb Bush and Valerie Jarrett are pulling the strings.
War is Peace Freedom is Slavery Ignorance is Strength
Hell, I think it's worse. At least you can claim a correlation between our current gun laws and gun violence. Might not agree with it, but it has verisimilitude.
NATO, on the other hand, has about jack all to do with today's attack in Belgium. They're never going to prevent this sort of thing, especially not when Europe is committing continental suicide by importing people from Africa and the Middle East.
Invasion is Love
Great post, tumblindice
NATO was created as a defense against the Soviet Union when the US had shared values with Europe. There is no Soviet Union and we no longer share values with Europe. I don’t know what Trump said or why he said it, but there is a strong case to be made for pulling out of NATO.
Again, opportunist Ted tries to distort the truth in his favor. Here is what was said:
Donald Trump said the United States should spend less on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
“We are paying disproportionately. It’s too much and frankly it’s a
different world than it was when we originally conceived of the idea,”
Trump said on CNN.
“We have to reconsider. Keep NATO, but maybe we have to pay a lot less toward NATO itself,” he said.
The United States should maintain its role in NATO, but should stop
carrying such a heavy burden funding it, Trump said
Trump admitted that other NATO members might not be happy with his idea, but added, “they have to help us also.”
The United States can’t afford to do all of this anymore to the same
extent,” he said, noting that NATO’s creation after World War II “was a
different time, it was a different age.”
I generally like Cruz, but he is wrong here and should not be using this issue for political purposes.
How much do you get paid for posting this shit non stop?
You do realize this makes Cruz look like as much like an idiot as you, right?
Ted, you’ve gone full fruitcake.
Pssst, NATO is becoming a Muslim empire.
Your projection is working overtime.
Well, sure, when you take the video clip that the media posted, the edited, out of context, video clip that shows Teds ANSWER to a QUESTION, that was specifically asked about his reaction to Trumps comments, then by all means, it would appear as the left, and anti-Cruz people want it to appear. And probably the reason why they are using the EDITED video, in the first place.
But, if you look at the video Aaron Herron posted, a couple posts up, it shows the ENTIRE CLIP of Ted Cruz comments IN FULL, and then it also shows the QUESTIONS that he was asked AFTER HIS STATEMENT, where he then is asked specifically about Trump, and gives his answer (which is the clip the media posted).
His statement, in full, transcribed, since so many seem to have such difficulty in WATCHING A FULL VIDEO, is here:
CRUZ:...is to defeat radical Islamic Terrorism, to defeat ISIS. Until they are defeated, these attacks will continue. Until ISIS is utterly destroyed, they will continue, to carry out acts of terror, continue to murder. Whether at a subway station, whether at an airport, whether at an opera house in Paris, whether at a community center in San Bernardino. Their target is each and every one of us. And we need a president, who sets aside political correctness. In the wake of Brussells, we dont need another lecture from President Obama on Islamophobia. We need a Commander in Chief who does everything necessary to defeat the enemy. And we need to immediately halt the presidents ill advised plan to bring in, tens of thousands of Syrian Muslim refugees. Our vetting programs are woefully insufficient. This administration has no means of preventing those refuges from being ISIS terrorists. ISIS has stated its intention to infiltrate those refugees with terrorist coming to America to commit acts of jihad. And the time for the Presidents political correctness is past, the first priority of Commander in Chief is keeping America safe.
QUESTION 1 FROM REPORTER: Beyond Syrian refugees, is it time for the US to close its borders to all Muslims, like Donald Trump suggested?
CRUZ: It is time for us to implement serious vetting and we should not be allowing anyone to come into this country, that we cant vet to make sure that they are not radical Islamic terrorist, thats part of the problem with not defining the enemy. When you dont define the en then you dont have screen programs designed to keep them out. And I would note, you look at the San Bernardino terrorist, the female terrorist had publicly posted on social media, calls to Jihad. And yet the Obama administration, in yet another nod to political correctness, refused even to look to social media. That is an example of the myopia of this administration and its politically driven. Its not that they cannot see the threats of terrorism, it s that they refuse to look at, acknowledge or name the threats of terrorism because it is inconsistent with their political objectives.
QUESTION 2 FROM REPORTER: (hard to hear exact phrasing) Why are you more qualified than Donald Trump...campaigning for nomination.....what makes you a better commander in chief, when it comes to handling these problems.....? (very hard to make out complete question, but I could pick up Donalds name was mentioned and Cruz was being asked his opinion on their differences regarding how he would handle things compared to Trump)
CRUZ: (and this is where Cruz gives his answer, as shown in the video clip the media posted)
And it was a great response at that. Cruz is doing what a smart campaigner would do, and that is when asked by a reporter about why he would be better at something, than his competitor, he explains the opposing sides view and then his in contrast. It’s called answering a question WITH SUBSTANCE.
Jeesh, the knee jerk, immediate reaction, to believing misleading headlines, then accusing Cruz, slandering him, insulting him, and just going all frothy in the mouth over him, is very liberal of those who do that.
