Poll: Utah would vote for a Democrat for president over Trump

SALT LAKE CITY — If Donald Trump becomes the Republican Party's nominee, Utahns would vote for a Democrat for president in November for the first time in more than 50 years, according to a new Deseret News/KSL poll.

"I believe Donald Trump could lose Utah. If you lose Utah as a Republican, there is no hope," said former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, a top campaign adviser to the GOP's 2012 nominee, Mitt Romney.

he poll found that may well be true. Utah voters said they would reject Trump, the GOP frontrunner, whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is the Democratic candidate on the general election ballot.

While Clinton was only slightly ahead of Trump — 38 percent to 36 percent — Sanders, a self-declared Democratic socialist, holds a substantial lead — 48 percent to 37 percent over the billionaire businessman and reality TV star among likely Utah voters.

"Wow. Wow. That's surprising," said Chris Karpowitz, co-director of Brigham Young University's Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy. "Any matchup in which Democrats are competitive in the state of Utah is shocking."

Cool, let Cruz be Governor of Utah then.

Trump will win Florida, a state McCain and Romney both lost, and a state where Cruz finished third.

Cruz would soundly defeat Hillary, probably a similar map to Bush/Kerry.

Winning Florida, Iowa, New Mexico, and Nevada?

I doubt it. A lot has changed since 2004.

Bull***t narrative to make Cruz’s pending Utah win seem like momentum.

It isn’t. Cruz will lose Arizona the same day, and the next half dozen states after that. He’s going broke and continues to side with the GOPe and leftist hoping to appeal to “moderate” cucks.

It’s over.

Romney will make sure Hillary wins. That’s it in a nutshell. Obviously he is doing his best to turn his mormon buddies away from Trump.......extremely transparent manipulation to keep the upper eschelon in place and to continue to impose parasitism on the tax-payers.

Voters were apathetic about Romney when he was running for President. I don’t understand how anyone could believe Romney wields influence over voters outside the state of Utah (mostly Mormon).

Realistically - I am not cheerleading for any of them it is pretty obvious to me that Trump is the only candidate left on the GOP side who might stand a chance of winning one of the big states that democrats normally dominate. Trump polls well in NY and NJ and even parts of New England. From my point of view, Trump - warts and all, is best positioned to win the main event.

Cruz? I supported him at the outset on principle, but never really believed he could win the general election. Nothing has really changed my mind and these “polls” that claim he is the best chance for victory in the general ignore reality. He polls well in the GOP gimme states - outside of that he has little support.

Kasich? The guy appears to generate as much enthusiasm in the voting public as Romney did.

It is obvious to me that the best positioned candidate is Trump. He has support among groups that are almost always voting democrat and all he has to do is take away a portion of those votes. A major key for him is going to be regaining some of the disaffected GOP minded voters who he has turned off. If he can win some of them over and keep the supporters from unlikely sources he could be a very big winner with a mandate.

ABH - anybody but Hillary. Utah is not very significant in the general election, but it’s hard to imagine they would vote for Hillary because Romney said so. Maybe I am wrong, but I doubt it.

By contrast, the poll finds that Cruz would beat Clinton by 60% to 32%.

Did they find out how badly Romney would beat Clinton?

Romney trounced Obama in the 2012 general election in Utah ~73% to ~25%. You have to wonder why Cruz is under performing so badly.

But let's see, last election was 73% / 25%, and we are worried about Utah going for Clinton? You know what? I understand that they do as they are told out there, but in actuality, this tells us all we need to know about the anti-Trump "100 days" stuff.

There is no way Utah is going to vote for Hillary, this is just primary politics and that is what is behind all of these polls and this Utah poll absolutely positively proves it.

Cruz is an establishment politician. He is also a LIAR. He tried to screw Ben Carson by putting out FALSE INFORMATION about Ben.
He is sitting on the fence regarding immigration and importing multitudes of muslims.
He has no integrity.
He simply wants to win.

Clinton is likely to win 50 states plus the District of Columbia.

Cruz does better in many individual states, as well. I don’t know how the Trump supporters can keep claiming Trump would do better than Cruz in the general simply because he has more delegates in the primary.

I don’t believe this poll for a second! Hillary Clinton beating Trump in Utah, one of the most Republican states in the USA. I don’t think so. This poll comes out after Beck, Romney, and Cruz have been in the state for several days.

Well, of course. Cruz is one of the faithful Mormons that is going to save the Constitution, er, something like that. Whatever Glenn Beck said.
