Establishment Republicans are looking to retired senator Tom Coburn or retired Texas governor Rick Perry as possible third-party options if they cant stop Donald Trump at a brokered convention in Cleveland.
Neoconservative pundit Bill Kristol, son of Irving, has been one of the leading forces trying to broker the convention to throw out the will of the people if Donald Trump fails to make it to 1,237 delegates before July. But even if Trump reaches 1,237, Kristol and the gang are considering running a third-party candidate against him to split the vote, ensure that Hillary Clinton wins, and keep control of the party that is slipping out of their grasp.
The New York Times reported Saturday:
The names of a few well-known conservatives have been offered up in recent days as potential third-party standard-bearers, and William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, has circulated a memo to a small number of conservative allies detailing the process by which an independent candidate could get on general-election ballots across the country.
Among the recruits under discussion are Tom Coburn, a former Oklahoma senator who has told associates that he would be open to running, and Rick Perry, the former Texas governor who was suggested as a possible third-party candidate at a meeting of conservative activists on Thursday in Washington.
Clinton would be a better choice for the establishment Republicans, who can still fundraise off of their opposition to her. Clinton would also presumably give them more establishment-friendly policies than Trump, who is looking to push economic policies that benefit the middle and lower classes and small businesses.

JohnBrowdie’s comment was sarcastic from the get.
You saw fit to back him.
DoughtyOne’s small graphic doesn’t intrude on anyone’s space and serves as a reminder to FReepers who wish to participate in FR’s Caucus. DoughtyOne has put a lot of work into the Caucus and participants are greatly appreciative!
He thought he was. His parents were original neo-cons. She was Gertrude Himmelfarb-Kristol. Backslid, for all intents and purposes, non-practising, lapsed Jews. What makes them wierd to my mind is that, Jewish or not, being neo-cons, they are anti-Israel.
I think his main problem is that, right out of the gate Kristol poo-poohed Trump, discounted him and wrote him off. Now here we are, facing the final 20 state primaries and Trump leads in everything. So Kristol, et al are so desperate to make good their disdain for Trump, that they’re thinking of running the likes of Rick Perry as a rogue third party candidate.
Rick Perry is a nice enough Guy, I guess. But policy wise, and in regard to what he’d do for our failing, flailing Country; lined up beside Donal Trump, Rick Perry looks like a bucket of warm spit.
Let ‘em do it; and get their butts handed to them!
Everyone ought find a shredder if the have a copy of Weekly Standard handy. Run it through the shredder, and mail it back to Kristol, personally.
Shred your issues of the magazine, and mail it back to Billy Boy.
Yes, we do have a right to disagree, what matters is how far we can continue disagreeing and insulting each other. Let it go...
They know full well that this will hand it to the DIMs ...they must be soundly defeated with overwhelming support for Trump ...
Kristol is all about the crusty pantsuit. Actually I find this more sickening than humorous.
I’ve spent two months on this effort. Each day I spend several hours prepping for and posting the caucus and the results each day? I also spend more time making sure folks can link to the thread.
What did you contribute to the effort?
The first thing you are contributing to it is trash me for placing a small patriotic looking link to the caucus on threads.
Yes, I agree that was rather silly.
223 people have taken part in the caucus today. They think it adds some value here. We have had around 15,000 votes on the caucus now. Who exactly was that hurting?
Should I just shut it down because you think it’s best if folks don’t have a link to the caucus for half the day, each day?
Good grief.
The movie is not a chick flick, but more of a comedy, and has given rise to a number of cliches. IIRC it has the same male lead as Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
Amen!
He was VP Dan Quayle’s chief aide.
I don’t think they’re thinking that far ahead. What’s right in front of their noses is the necessity to defeat Trump. War-monger, neo-con Hillary would be a far lesser evil, from their point of view. Open borders, middle-east wars that use Islamists as tools, hand-outs to businesses in which they are invested, what’s not to like?
Sorry... Tom Coburn has been dealing with serious health issues that last few years, and if Bill Kristol doesn’t know that he hasn’t been paying attention to the Senate, because everyone who’s been paying attention knows why Tom Coburn didn’t run for another term.
Platform of the Milquetoast Party
- support for Davos points of global geo-economic outreach
- hatred for Donald Trump
- disdain for the Constitution
- that’s pretty much it
“It’s all about control of the party. FUBK!”
That is the story, and it will become more obvious as the primaries pile up. This is about MONEY. GOPe consultants and GOPe appaRATchiks will lose jobs and contracts making them OBSOLETE!
The fight has only begun. This will get ugly and the ugly will be exposed.
They may prefer the policies, but they will be in the back of the bus in a Hillary government. I think it is a power play to wrest back control of the Republcan Party for 2018 and ‘20. If Donald wins, they have lost it forever.
