Establishment Republicans are looking to retired senator Tom Coburn or retired Texas governor Rick Perry as possible third-party options if they cant stop Donald Trump at a brokered convention in Cleveland.
Neoconservative pundit Bill Kristol, son of Irving, has been one of the leading forces trying to broker the convention to throw out the will of the people if Donald Trump fails to make it to 1,237 delegates before July. But even if Trump reaches 1,237, Kristol and the gang are considering running a third-party candidate against him to split the vote, ensure that Hillary Clinton wins, and keep control of the party that is slipping out of their grasp.
The New York Times reported Saturday:
The names of a few well-known conservatives have been offered up in recent days as potential third-party standard-bearers, and William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, has circulated a memo to a small number of conservative allies detailing the process by which an independent candidate could get on general-election ballots across the country.
Among the recruits under discussion are Tom Coburn, a former Oklahoma senator who has told associates that he would be open to running, and Rick Perry, the former Texas governor who was suggested as a possible third-party candidate at a meeting of conservative activists on Thursday in Washington.
Clinton would be a better choice for the establishment Republicans, who can still fundraise off of their opposition to her. Clinton would also presumably give them more establishment-friendly policies than Trump, who is looking to push economic policies that benefit the middle and lower classes and small businesses.

I would suggest you take you incredibly offended concerns to Jim.
If he thinks I’m ruining his forum, he’ll let me know.
The icon is small and inoffensive. All you need to do is move right on by it.
I have resorted to this icon as a link to the Free Republic Daily Caucus because the Caucus falls off the side-bar.
It’s helpful for there to be a link.
Why is the so offensive to you?
It’s not even close to a chick flick. But, you’re not required to watch it or anything.
My understanding is that he is way out of their league.
How do they “keep control” if they abandon the Party and run a rogue 3rd party candidate. If they bolt; they’re out!
What I don’t get is how they think they get back control of the party after they have broken with it, assuming they succeed in defeating Trump in November.
What’s John Anderson doing these days?
No. Why do I need to? I am on your side and we do not need baseless insults to everyone replying to this. What is the point?
Doughty can post whatever he wants but stop the sarcastic indignation. “Talk sense to a fool and be called foolish” comes to mind. Relax, John had a valid point. Let it go...
I already know all about Doughty’s caucus and choose not to participate. Seeing ads for it everywhere makes no difference.
Bill Kristol even nuttier than Glenn Beck...
Kristol is a freakin’ idiot.
You must mean, “To keep control of the United States.”
Whatever you say. I don't watch chick movies.
Give it up. This is really silly. Sorry I even made an effort. John is still correct.
There are two very different ways that they could do this — with a serious contender, or with a spoiler candidate.
A serious contender is a candidate who could win enough states that nobody gets a majority in the Electoral College, leaving the Presidency to be decided by the House of Representatives (which would presumably still be in Republican hands).
A spoiler candidate is someone who is not likely to win many states, if any. A spoiler candidate would just throw the election to Hillary.
I’m guessing that Tom Coburn or Rick Perry would probably be a spoiler candidate, not a serious contender. Tom Coburn is too socially conservative to be competitive in much of the country, even though he’s excellent on liberty and free-market economics. Rick Perry is perceived as a lightweight.
Very odd that the establishment would be courting Rick Perry when he was on camera with Cruz and Fiorina last night on Hannity’s show, backing Cruz pretty vocally.
The establishment is desperately fishing around, with Romney also coming out for Cruz. They are playing all their cards, trying to keep Trump under 1,237, trying to pull Cruz in, playing these 3rd Party games, and ultimately looking to override the will of the voters. This will end badly for them and I think signal many positive future changes for the GOP. Now let’s beat Hillary!
Quote:
“So what would be the platform of this 3rd party candidate? Open Borders? Unlimited war in the Middle East?”
Yeah, same as the Republican Party platform since 1990.
Next Kristol will be suggesting we bring back the Studebaker automobile.
