What has happened to Free Republic? [What difference at this point can it possibly make?]

Posted on 03/17/2016 3:13:11 PM PDT by katwoman5779

Since Obuma was elected to POTUS, I have been coming to Free Republic to get news, opinions and a few laughs. Most of the serious posts were bemoaning the out of control government and what could be done about it. "Oh Whoa is Me!". Then along comes a constitutional conservative. For the first time since Ronald Reagan, we have a constitutional candidate running for the GOP nomination. This man was elected by conservatives to go to Washington and stand up to the elites that no longer listen to the American people. He didn't go to Washington and "fall in" with the crowd. He went there and stood up to them just like he said it would - calling a spade a spade. I'm sorry, but I don't understand how otherwise intelligent people can fall for the likes of Donald Trump. This man was donating to the same people we were fighting to throw out of office the last eight years. Suddenly he is a conservative after years of joining with the liberals to promote big fat bloated government. He is not an outsider. He has been greasing the palms of the slime bags in Washington for 30 years. He can't even define what conservatism is. Wake up America. You are no better than the sycophants that suck up to Obuma. You can't see that Trump is just pushing your buttons with his rhetoric - just like Obuma pushed his sycophants buttons. The hate I see on Free Republic for Ted Cruz, Mark Levin and all the other great conservative leaders remind me of liberal websites. It is disgusting.

“define conservative”

Constitutionally originalist. What they wrote is what they meant. We’re required to play by those rules, or constitutionally change the rules.

Strong military.

Limited Government.

Bill of Rights, including especially #1, 2, and 10.

Low Tax, including low taxes on trade.

Low Spend.

Pro Family (or at least not anti-family, like Welfare currently is)

Pro Religion. (You pick your own, and the government does not intervene, except to approve of the fact that people ought to be free to be religious.)

Pro Law Enforcement (not Pro-Law-Breaking-Illegal-Alien). Includes the willingness to repeal laws we don’t intend to enforce.

Free Market.

That’s close enough to my view of “conservative” for the purposes of discussion.

Me waiting on the wall to be built by Trump.

So, you think Hillary is going to win?

Well, for one we seem to have an increasing number of people who can’t use paragraphs.

Very sad and a sign of the End Times.

Trump is the best person to blow up Washington corruption. I think he’d have a great time doing it, to boot. I can see him giving weekly reports, informing all of the citizens of what he’s found and what he’s doing about it. It’s going to be exciting.

Trump will not waiver in prosecuting Hillary, and possibly Bubba, to the FULL extent of the law!

My problem with Cruz is he fought against obamacare and the budget and both were passed anyway. He is not good with persuading his message. He doesn’t do a thing for abortion or gay marriage. What the use of having him if all he does is talk but can’t produce? Plus it’s clear the voters are not interested in him at all. The only ones interested are the GOP leadership, RINO’s and a small few on FR. Can’t win a general with that.

As of 3/14 that meme has been busted..Yougov reported, via Free Republic:

This is the first time Trump has garnered the support of a majority of Republican primary voters nationwide. YouGov’s February 24-27 survey marked his previous high, at 44% support. More surprising is Donald Trump’s favorability rating. Despite constant attacks by FOX News, the GOP establishment and liberal media Donald Trump has a higher rating than the other GOP candidates.

We don’t hate Ted Cruz. We hate the TPP, Fast Track, the Corker Bill, the H1-B visa expansion, defrauding the United States government and the people, lying, overweening ambition, and single-minded grasping. We also hate the fact that so many are fooled by him.

If you are here to promote the Old Guard, the greatness of the Bush Family, you might want to turn tail fast.

Say what? Where did katwoman ever say that?

A Free Republic that promotes populism over conservative principles is doomed, but that's where the train is heading.

"Then along comes a constitutional conservative."

"Constitutional conservative" is a made up phrase that has means, Shiite Conservative, Checkbox Conservative, or Doctrinaire Conservative.

For the first time since Ronald Reagan, we have a constitutional candidate running for the GOP nomination.

Reagan was a practical conservative. Real world, get things done, get 80% and come back for the rest at a later time.

This man was elected by conservatives to go to Washington and stand up to the elites that no longer listen to the American people. He didn't go to Washington and "fall in" with the crowd. He went there and stood up to them just like he said it would - calling a spade a spade.

It is a good quality, but leadership also means moving the ball forward and scoring points. Ted is strong in many areas, but calling names and trying to block things is not the same as leading where people follow you.

I'm sorry, but I don't understand how otherwise intelligent people can fall for the likes of Donald Trump.

I think it is because people love their country. Patriots are like that.

This man was donating to the same people we were fighting to throw out of office the last eight years.

Businessman.

He is not an outsider. He has been greasing the palms of the slime bags in Washington for 30 years.

As an outsider.

He can't even define what conservatism is.

Got news for you. If you think conservatism is checking the most boxes, you don't need the Presidency. A small diner will hold your team as your list gets longer.

The hate I see on Free Republic for Ted Cruz, Mark Levin and all the other great conservative leaders remind me of liberal websites. It is disgusting.

No reason to hate either guy. You just hated Trump. A mirror may be in order.

Is this your opus?

Goodness. I recommend retracting that unless you have proof.

As a long-time denizen, I have the utmost confidence in the utter incorruptibility of our fearless leader.

Early on, his point was like my point: Defeat the Uniparty. Trump with Populism or Cruz with Conservatism. That was nearly on the day of Trump’s announcement. I stand by that position, even as a Cruz supporter. I expect JimRob does too, without dirty cash transacted for political expedience. Sheesh.

If this were the 1700s, you’d have a duel on your hands.

Trump criticized Romney in 2012 for being too harsh on illegal aliens, with his “self-deportation” ideas. Sometime between then and the start of his current political campaign, Trump switched over to supporting border and immigration enforcement. Quite a philosophical reversal for a man of his age.

I hope he’s sincere. Because borders/immigration is absolutely the only reason to vote for him. Otherwise he’s the most liberal candidate on the GOP side, and has been since there were 17 candidates.
