Breaking: Cruz Negotiating With Trump for VP Spot
A high ranking Cruz campaign official has told Elect Leaders that Sen. Cruz is in negotiations with Mr. Trump to become his Vice Presidential Nominee after Rubio dropped out Tuesday. Sen. Cruz has been the most consistent performer in primaries behind Trump. They are seeing the writing on the wall and want to negotiate from a point of strength which will evaporate over time.
The official stated Mr. Trump is interested in using Sen. Cruzs ground game in the general election, likes his appeal to the conservative base and his stance on immigration. Of the other options for VP none hold as strong of an opinion on immigration outside of Governor Jan Brewer from Arizona who is also being considered.
Senator Cruz in exchange for his support is wanting to be named to the Supreme Court if an opening occurs while Mr. Trump is president. Mr. Trump does not see this as an issue and a small price to pay to bring Sen. Cruz his fundraisers, donors and staff on board
I agree with you. Cruz did something and lied to Trump. Trump and Cruz were friendly before this and once you lie to Donald its over. TRUST is what Donald thrives on and Donald immediately started calling Cruz “Lying Cruz”.
If his goal -- as he claims -- is truly to "unite the party", then picking the only other candidate arguably more disliked by the rest of the party is not the way to go. And Cruz is not the kind of the guy who is going to assuage the concerns of swing voters nervous about Trump.
If Trump is going to be the nominee, then the primary goal in picking a VP nominee should be someone who can help him win in November. Rick Scott of Florida would be a fine choice, as would Jan Brewer. Even a guy like Rubio would help.
If Cruz isn't going to be President, then for God's sake put the guy on the Supreme Court. Ironclad constitutionalist, and young enough to be on the court for 30 years. He'd have far more influence on the country there than being a VP.
Amen to his talking style. It is straight out of “college debating!” You may win a debate, but lose the audience in the process.
You got that exactly back-asswards.
Trump has repeatedly called him a liar and nasty guy, he also said he’s Canadian, not eligible. I would love a Trump/Cruz ticket, but how would Trump square this with voters after he accused Ted of bad things.
“Mr. Trump does not see this as an issue and a small price to pay to bring Sen. Cruz his fundraisers, donors and staff on board”
Why would Cruz turn his organization over to Trump? Not sure Trump has anything credible to offer Cruz. VP is a mugs game. Supreme Court depends on Trump winning the general, keeping his promise to nominate Cruz, and getting Cruz through a Borking (would require Senate R’s to exercise nuclear option). That is, any promise re Supreme Court has about a 5% chance of actually happening.
Bluntly, I think 2016 is over and HRC is president. I’ll hold my nose, vote for Trump, and hope there is something left worth fighting for in 2020. If there is, Cruz still has the organization and is the presumptive nominee so long as he doesn’t deal with either Trump or the GOP-E this year.
In politics ANYTHING is POSSIBLE.
A dishonest, power hungry Texas, do anything to win politician. :)
>>VP has no influence or power over anything.<<
In years past. VP is usually a do nothing position, but as president of the Senate, breaks all ties in voting. VP also sits on the national security counsel and helps formulate policy.
As far as the election, Trump/Cruz ticket would be unbeatable.
If Cruz has scintilla of the character he claims to have, he should put the will of the majority of Americans before his personal search for glory. Man up for once in your life Ted.
Something happened. We may never know. But the switch was flipped.
I don’t know that Trump can do a Reagan/Bush. Maybe. Somehow, I doubt it.
But then again, if that is the only way to get through the convention without GOPE taking it away from him ..he might.
But he will never get along personally behind the scenes again with Cruz in a trusted relationship....unless Cruz falls on the sword and apologizes profusely - and maybe not even then.
“Someone like Newt.”
I like that idea!
Wrong, the primary goal in picking a V.P. is picking someone who could be a great President.
President Scott or President Brewer make me want to PUKE! NO MODERATES! No candidates who refused to support religious liberty over the homosexual lobby.
“Id like them both to run united as a 3rd party ticket. Id wager in that scenario, the GOPe ticket would finish an ugly third place.”
And Hillary would win in a rout.
Before that Trump was claiming Cruz was constitutionally ineligible so I'd say the well had been poisoned long before Trump started with the name calling.
Things went south after that debate the moderator asked Cruz about his eligibility problems.... Cruz LIED and claim that Trump might have eligibility problems himself because of Trump's mother... And Cruz played the holy roller trashing New York values.
And by now Trump would have to explain why he would have an illegal Canadian one heartbeat away from him.
The Kabuki theater production going on in Wash D.C. for the last 10 years has already taken it beyond anything you're talking about.
I know he has said he’s a conservative originalist but he has done some un-conservative things - like his votes.
You probably don’t agree but I don’t think he’s eligible to be POTUS because of his provenance - and this is why Lawrence Tribe called him a hypocrite.
I think he’s a guy who let his ambition - and maybe his dad’s “annointed” thing get the better of him.
