If his goal -- as he claims -- is truly to "unite the party", then picking the only other candidate arguably more disliked by the rest of the party is not the way to go. And Cruz is not the kind of the guy who is going to assuage the concerns of swing voters nervous about Trump.
If Trump is going to be the nominee, then the primary goal in picking a VP nominee should be someone who can help him win in November. Rick Scott of Florida would be a fine choice, as would Jan Brewer. Even a guy like Rubio would help.
If Cruz isn't going to be President, then for God's sake put the guy on the Supreme Court. Ironclad constitutionalist, and young enough to be on the court for 30 years. He'd have far more influence on the country there than being a VP.
