In years past. VP is usually a do nothing position, but as president of the Senate, breaks all ties in voting. VP also sits on the national security counsel and helps formulate policy.
As far as the election, Trump/Cruz ticket would be unbeatable.
All this talk of a weak VP is laughable.
Bush the elder and Dick Cheney had tons of clout when they were VP.
Of course then there is Biden the clown. :-)
