Ohio Gov. John Kasich leads GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump by 5 points in Mr. Kasichs home state, according to a poll released on the eve of the March 15 primary there.
Mr. Kasich had the support of 40 percent of likely GOP primary voters in Ohio in the Monmouth University poll released Monday, followed by Mr. Trump at 35 percent.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was at 15 percent and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida was at 5 percent.
The Ohio race is tight, but with Rubio floundering in Florida, Kasich could potentially bolster his standing as the establishments alternative to Trump and Cruz with a win here, said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.
The Monmouth survey, conducted Friday to Sunday, is about in line with other recent polling on the Buckeye State; the latest Real Clear Politics average shows Mr. Kasich with a slight edge over Mr. Trump there.

18% tea partiers support Kasich? That shows that you can’t trust anyone.
Ohio is not open, it’s modified meaning Independents can vote but those registered with a party have to vote within that party.
Problem is, Ohio used to be closed and I’m not at all sure most Independents realize they can vote.
I agree. He’s not an inspiring national candidate. Gerry Ford type. Ohio has always been a swing state.

oh, bummer
Don’t sell the guy short.
If, by winning Ohio, Kasich can keep both Trump and Cruz just one delegate shy of the 1237, the GOP-e RINOs will be so relieved and grateful they may give HIM the nomination in a brokered convention.
The convention being held, “conveniently” in Cleveland Ohio, perhaps the only location safe from being burnt to ashes by outraged Trump and Cruz supporters.
Sometimes you want your Governor to be a boring, competent guy. Can’t think of a POTUS candidate for whom that approach has worked.
I left the tea party back in early 2011 when it first became obvious that they were simply grasping at straws, and time and time again since 2010, they have chosen RINO’s in sheep’s clothing over the true constitutional conservative, hard working Americans. Tea Party = Establishment light
Kasich has a pretty high approval rating as Governor. I think the NAFTA and TPP positions should hurt, but I'm not sure how well known those are.
I'm holding out hope that something amazing, like Pete Rose appearing on stage with Trump tonight, will result in a monumental surge in low-turnout voters and cross-overs.
There is some indication that there are votes to be mined in Southern Ohio. We shall see.
Can be Rush Limbaugh says Cruz is surging everywhere
He said Ted Cruz response to Trump was 100% right on
Then said Marco Rubio's speech in Largo, Florida was his best speech where he said supporting Trump is getting harder
"I stay out of GOP primaries" , Rush Limbaugh
I believe the last Cleveland convention was for Coolidge in 1924 following the death of Harding.
Rush must be looking for another Clinton in the White House then. That was, after all, the golden age for his show.
Kasich is right now on Hann=ity having his ass handed to him about sabotaging the Republican primary towards a brokered convention.
No, actually, he does not.
It happened that RINOs infiltrated the Tea Party, but I don’t think that is what the Tea Party intended. Like most Americans, they can be easily fooled.
Any discussion re: Soros & friends funding Kasich $600,000?
You are right.
