Why Romney-led #NeverTrump movement is a flop (Vanity)
March 4, 2016 | self

The New York Times greets people at newsstands today with huge headlines, usual reserved for wars and other historic events. "Romney ... Trump ... Nation in peril."

And, yet, before the ink is even dry, the Romney-led #NeverTrump movement is visibly a flop. And the Romney speech is a non-story.

A. RNC Chairman Priebus: The rules of the nominating process are “no different today than 100 years ago. Which is you have a process. And whatever candidate gets a majority of the delegates is going to get the support of the party. That’s how it works,” Reince Priebus said on CNN Thursday.

B. 8 more states in the next 4 days: Trump will dominate again. He may lose Kansas or Idaho, but it could be an 8 for 8 sweep.

C. Romney has until March 26 to get on the California primary ballot of June 7th. There is no indication of any effort in that direction.

D. Even if Kasich and Rubio are successful on the 15th, Trump looks like a winner the same day in MO, NC, ILL.

F. Romney could have stormed the Utah caucuses and won on the 22nd, perhaps electing an uncommitted slate. But the same day in AZ, there is no "uncommitted" spot on the ballot. Who competes with Trump there?

G. The idea of packing the Rubio & Cruz slates with #NeverTrump people would have limited success. Local party people who become delegates think for themselves and are just as likely to be #NeverCruz or #NeverMarco or #NeverRomney. Recall that the Romney people were never too good at the state-by-state minutia required in such an effort. Ron Paul's people ran circles around them at caucuses and conventions in 2012.

H. A merger to create a Cruz-Rubio or Rubio-Cruz ticket? Whomever is VP "2nd man" in that deal will find a chunk of his delegates will resist and go with Trump on a 2nd ballot.

This little episode is now over and the voters can now get back to selecting their nominee.

I am a right-to-lifer for Cruz.

If Cruz wants to be the nominee, he needs to go to WISC and PENN and California, etc. and win the primaries.

It might be useful to study 1976 ... Reagan's effort to swing the PENN delegates to him by choosing Richard Schweiker as his VP. It failed.

And study the #NeverJimmy movement in 1976 as Frank Church, Jerry Brown and Mo Udall chased Carter through all the primaries. Carter was LOSING primaries, yet #NeverJimmy failed.

It is a flop because this election is about national borders and ejecting people who shouldn’t be here.

Globalist versus nationalists.

Romney’s record is that of another globalist.

After last night looks like Rubio is done after FL while Kaisch may, or may not, win OH.

What is your take on how that effects the race?

As the other thread stated Romney did not last 24 hours. I bet he did not expect all the incoming fire.

which other thread?

Romney finding out that in politics you need to win votes at the polling places.

.... yeah, Rubio is a fail on the 15th, would drop out.
expect Kasich to surge in the north. They will keep holding primaries! ... and Trump could have a tough April. But the month of May: NEB, WestVirgina, ORE, WASH ... Trump states.

And the Romney speech is a non-story.

I am a Cruz fan for Trump. Cruz is exactly like me politically and theologically, and I am unelectable because we are doubly-despised, by at least 6 of the 8 socio-political elements of 2016 America. We comprise no more than 33% of the electorate. 67% have no use for us.

Romney's speech was momentous if my take on it is correct. He seemed to have given 19 minutes of insulting chaff in order to insert 1 minute of dastardly strategems: he said, "All Cruz and Rubio supporters, vote for Kasich in Ohio." And "All Kasich and Cruz supporters, vote for Rubio in Florida." The idea is that by voting this way, Trump could be denied the two winner-take-all states. That is a VERY establishment ploy.

Romney's strategem, if followed, is the only chance the others have of prolonging this race beyond Mar 15, and to (possibly) create an open convention. It is an operation chaos against one's own party. I think it is dirty pool, but, I guess, what the hey? That's all the establishment has left, and chicken-manure strategies are their stock in trade.

As I recall, at the end of the 1976 primary process, Jimmy Carter had a plurality but not a majority of delegates selected. But then, various Democrats started putting support behind him, so that by the time of the convention, Carters nomination was not in doubt.

I knew from the outset that Romney was going to swoop in at the last second and offer himself as a “compromise” candidate if the primaries did not result in a winner. So it’s no surprise.

Jeb? Out. Romney? Self-inflicted head wound. Whatever else is going on, the Pubbies are revoking their legacy candidate policy. Dems are doubling down.

“It is a flop because Romney has small hands.”

Loving the way Rubio’s statement is coming back to bite him and others.

I am calling it the Pinocchio Syndrome that swings both ways. Megan Kelly lies and her eyelashes grow longer, whereas when Rubio states Donald Trump has small hands which reflects on his manhood, Trump’s manhood grows longer.
