Real estate mogul Donald Trump would not let states take control of federal lands, the Republican presidential candidate said in a recent interview.
"I don't like the idea because I want to keep the lands great, and you don't know what the state is going to do," Trump said during a talk with Field & Stream magazine earlier this week.
The trade publication, sitting down with Trump at Las Vegas' Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoor Trade Show, had asked about the issue of turning over federally controlled lands to individual states -- an idea previously floated by rival 2016 contender and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul and supported by staunch states-rights activists.
The proposal has also received more attention in light of recent actions by radical conservatives like Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his son Ammon Bundy, who led an armed group earlier this month in occupying a national wildlife refuge in Oregon to protest federal land use policies.
Trump cautioned, however, that states would be unpredictable in maintaining the designated lands.
"I mean, are they going to sell if they get into a little bit of trouble?" Trump asked. "I don't think it's something that should be sold."
He added: "We have to be great stewards of this land. This is magnificent land. And we have to be great stewards of this land."
The billionaire businessman suggested later in the interview that while he was a fan of oil and gas companies drilling and fracking on federal lands, protecting the earth should still be a top priority.
"I'm very much into energy, and I'm very much into fracking and drilling, and we never want to be hostage again to OPEC and go back to where we were. And right now, we're at a very interesting point because right now there's so much energy," Trump said. "And maybe that's an advantage and maybe--actually, it's more of an advantage in terms of your question because we don't have to do the kind of drilling that we did."
"I am for energy exploration, as long as we don't do anything to damage the land. And right now we don't need too much -- there's a lot of energy," he said.
So 30 wealthy guys got together, formed a corporation and bought 900,000 acres. Then they sold off shares and/or parcels by lottery...profiting in a very short time.
The next plan didn't work so well either. Look at the Phelps & Gorham Purchase in NYS...and then the Holland Purchase.
We here in NY showed the Land Barons how it's done.
Why give the land to the individuals states? It was never theirs in the first place. It was paid for by Federal dollars and/or Federal troops. Now if the Feds want to sell it at a fair market price to the states to help pay down the Federal deficit then that would be ok...for at least a portion of the land. Plus these states are just as corrupt as the Feds.
I don’t understand what anyone trusts about the establishment politicians. We already know they are backstabbers. Why elect another one of them?
I don’t nor is Cruz right.
The land belongs to the people individually and should be sold off, not to states OR the Feds.
A while back I was reading some quotes from Trump and i thought to myself “well we are in trouble. Donald Trump has used up all the adjectives and there are none left for the rest of us”! LOL.
He's simply amazing, isn't he?
OF course then you have to assume the states will do the right thing, still dealing with Gov.. Have a regional state ordained regional landfill right down the road, steamrolled right in over the its neighbors.
“Yep. Plus...”
Everybody points at the other side and says, “You just don’t get it.” However, I can think of a couple of things that you don’t seem to get.
1. We have been invaded. Border crashing is the analogue of arterial bleeding. We only have a very short time to get a tourniquet on that, or the country is going to die. As with physical death, the death of our country will be final and irrevocable.
All—all, all, all—the other candidates will allow us to bleed to death. They can’t even bring themselves to promise us a tourniquet.
Trump, at least, is promising to bind our mortal wound. Maybe he’ll do it, and maybe he won’t, but even “maybe” is better than what the Two Cubans and the rest are offering.
2. Cruz is a weak man. It’s as plain as the nose on his face. If you can’t see it, worry about your ability to read people.
Sheesh...just wrote a p.o.’d post in FAVOR of Trump and then click back to see this.
He really doesn’t understand anything this side of the freakin’ Hudson.
Yeah, keep the lands “great”. That’s what the Feds do, keep things “great”.
Don’t want to trust the states...or God forbid the VOTERS??
What an idiot.
Gee, another good reason to vote for Trump /s
Can’t wait for his sheep to explain this away.
Maroon. Never trust the locals, they are dumber than the nationals you know, because a, um, they are in different places very far apart!!!!
Seik heil, mine Furher! (not from great city so cant spell)
Excess Federal lands should be sold to pay down the National Debt.
ping
Trump will likely take a look at it and decide policy on a case-by-case basis.

Yeah, this is just what I need to DUMP Trump across the board! He does not share rural western American values at all. He will run roughshod over private property apparently and make deals with the foreign elites instead.
How much more, must this guy reveal, before people realize he is a) NOT a conservative; b) not about fixing the real problems we face; and c) part of the problems we face?????
The whole interview
Awww...you poor thing. Did someone pee in your cornflakes this morning?
