GOP showing signs of backing down from vow to block Obama SCOTUS pick

SenateJudiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, Iowa Republican, didn't rule out confirmation hearings and a vote by his panel on an Obama selection.

"I would wait until the nominee is made before I would make any decision," Mr. Grassley said Tuesday in a conference call with Iowa radio reporters. "In other words, take it a step at a time."

Asked whether he thought the controversy over filling the court vacancy might endanger his re-election chances this fall, Mr. Grassley said, "I think I have a responsibility to perform, and I can't worry about the election. I've got to do my job as a senator, whatever it is. And there will be a lot of tough votes between now and the next election."

His comments appeared to be a softening from a statement shortly after Justice Scalia's death, when Mr. Grassley said it was "standard practice" not to nominate or confirm candidates for the Supreme Court in an election year.

"It only makes sense that we defer to the American people who will elect a new president to select the next Supreme Court Justice," Mr. Grassley said in a statement Saturday.

Sen. Thom Tillis, North Carolina Republican, voiced caution about blocking any Obama nominee automatically.

"I think we fall into the trap if [we] just simply say, sight unseen, we fall into the trap of being obstructionists," Mr. Tillis said on Tyler Cralle's radio show.

If they were really concerned about “doing their job” they would only confirm people who could actually take the oath of office without at the same time breaking it.

They would pass a budget as required by the Constitution.

They would impeach (and convict!) officials who were guilty of high crimes like obstruction of justice and treason.

They would close our borders and throw in jail the POTUS, AG, and anybody else who was purposely allowing an illegal invasion by our Islamist enemies.

They would do the Constitutional duty of protecting this nation from attack - specifically by closing the hole in our southern radar defense now that North Korea and Iran both have nukes for an EMP attack and have launched satellites at the right altitude and in the right orbit to exploit that hole.

When they get done doing those things, THEN they can take time to address the Foreign Enemy Combatant-In-Chief’s buddies who are supposed to infiltrate SCOTUS to destroy us from within - and officially shoot them down just like our missile defense has to shoot down the attacks of the enemy!!

cruz better break out his filibuster sweatsuit

An epic filibuster to prevent an Obama SC nomination could propel him to the front of the pack!

We need a "Mister Smith Goes To Washington" filibuster!

This will be the end of the GOP. millions will stay home in November...and forever after.

You idiots in DC had BETTER listen: NO Obama replacement for Scalia, or your party (NOT “our party”) will be unceremoniously tossed on to History’s garbage heap.

McConnell: grow a pair for once and do what Harry Reid would do if he was in your position: stonewall.

Putting another leftist on the court is a bit more destructive than just downing the GOP. It is putting an end to our constitutional Republic which globalists want to do. The rinos are globalists.

So Sad because I thought Grassley was one of the good guys...apparently not...has he been “gotten to”? This is not the first really unusual thing he has stated...

The GOP is not known for fighting. They look down on people like Trump who actually fight back.

He is just so unsophisticated unlike the Senate who likes to surrender graciously.

Pray America wakes

Obama will threaten to shut down the government over this nomination and the GOP will fold like they always do.

Ironically for the GOPe and bad news for Dumbo, thanks to the last budget surrender by Ryan I believe they are funded into next year. No fall budget battle IIRC.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Sight unseen, I will guarantee anybody O’Bunghole nominates, will work their hardest to first declare the bill of rights unconstitutional, then ultimately will declare the entire constitution unconstitutional as well as racist, sexist, xenophopic hate speech

We’d better flood the phones tomorrow. That may be the only way to get them to do the right thing.

Bet you piece of pie my Senators vote in the Obama nominee—

Eh, ok I confess that it is not a fair bet...my Ssenators are Durbin-D and Kirk-RINO which means they will send the new Supreme a Welcome Basket :(

An obama nominee will not be tolerated . Trump would be swept in in a landslide and the Gope would get politically slaughtered for years

WENDLE, You have a good point, but Supreme is a lifetime appointment—even if a decent candidate wins, court is balanced to the left for some time :( Yes, GOPe will be punished and likely be out of business, but it will be difficult for any conservative to fully implement reforms needed to save the country. Screw these GOPe Senators.

It doesn’t matter if they voted yay or nay, because we know how the game works, those with vulnerable seats will get to vote “no” to try to cover for them.

Nope. We take ‘em all out if they fail.

It is interesting that I can call my “elected representatives” 2 weeks, 2 days, even 2 hours before a vote, and yet I am never told how my “representative” will be voting. Whether Senate or House, it truly is a House of Cards—and I mean far worse than the Netflix series :(
