Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

Wrong. It’s amazing how few have thought it through.
It’s intended to keep track of everybody. If you’re not in their database, if you can’t get permission from a bureaucrat, you don’t work.
On the video I saw, Cruz beat back the press and completely refused to engage on the issue. I’m not going to sit through another video but this just seems like just another false attack.
Thank you, yes. He basically told them “forget it”.
I was in a large market just outside of Boston yesterday. I was the only white person there, except for some of the people who worked there. There were hundreds of Spanish, Indian, Chinese, muslin and who knows who else but they wore veils. I felt watched. If anyone is being watched, it’s white citizens. We are being monitored and we are also becoming outnumbered. I never felt like the minority in this part of town before, except for within the last year.
I overreacted. I just really prefer Trump. I take back what I said, it was a spur of the moment thing about this subject.
If you are a temporary or permanent resident or apply for citizenship, I believe they already know your religion (you must fill it in).
If you are a resident or just a visa holder, you have to tell the immigration/customs agent at the point of entry where you are going.
If a resident, you also have to submit a form to the USCIS for a change in address within 10 days of the move.
If you are illegally in the US, you don’t have to do anything, but you can apply for and get welfare.
There are reasons people who do everything legally DON’T like what illegals do, in addition to fear illegals have ties to crime both in the US and in the country from which they came.
Again Cruz shows the reporter he is smarter than he is.
okay... just was wondering if I had missed something in the past week concerning Cruz..
I prefer Cruz, but will vote for Trump if he is the candidate.
Why do I prefer Cruz? He is socially conservative, and a proven leader. His historic stand against the entire Republican establishment last year, on Obamacare showed me what this man is made of.. pure resolve to do what is right.
Nuf said.
I see Cruz doing his best work as Attorney General, Supreme Court Justice, or VP, and in that order.
What Cruz has referred to as “Trump’s” position is not true!!! Ted....you gotta learn to never trust anything the Obamabot media feeds you!!! I like you a ton, Ted...but you hurt yourself today by commenting on an item that was an outright lie!!! If I were you, I would it back right now!!! Trump is not your enemy.......... Obama & Hillary are your sworn enemies!!!
I’m most certain Cruz would fill any of those spots well.
If Trump gets the nomination, Cruz would be his most sensible VP choice, even though he may be more affective on the Supreme Court. If Cruz is selected as the VP candidate for Trump it will all but insure his victory against the Democrats.
We will see how this plays out. I don’t discount Cruz’s ability to win the nomination for Pres however...I don’t watch polls that close.
Cruz is a class act. He never went after Trump. The media sure knows how to twist the truth and too many voters believe the garbage. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) refused to attack his 2016 opponent Donald Trump on Friday, despite a reporterâs persistent attempts to spark a war of words.
âIâm a big fan of Donald Trumpâs, but Iâm not a fan of government registries of Americans citizens,â he said when asked about Trumpâs remarks on the need for a Muslim-tracking database. âThe First Amendment protects religious liberty, and Iâve spent the past several decades defending the religious liberty of every American.â
When a reporter then pressed him on whether he was concerned about Trumpâs âmessagingâ as the frontrunner, Cruz shut down the line of questioning.
âListen, I like Donald Trump. I recognize the media would love to get me and other candidates to attack Donald Trump,â Cruz added. âThere may be other candidates who want to do that â I ainât going to do it. So, Iâll tell you my policy views, but I have no interest in attacking Donald Trump or, for that matter, attacking Ben Carson. Both are good men. And Iâm not interested in throwing rocks at either one of them
The govt already has the data on everyone in the country and what religion everyone is. Now how is and will that data be used?
Playing mind games with weak people that are ready to believe their twist on words. Cruz is a class act.
You’re right. I think he meant in essence that particular attention has to be paid to the muslim community because of the terror attack threat. Get eyes and ears into the community.
GO CRUZ GO!!!
You said it... the MSM wants a battle.. neither Trump nor CRUZ are going to allow that!! Both are to be admired along that line.
Continue to consider Islam a “religion” and pay the consequences. It is a personality CULT and if you can’t see it and the damage it does to Freedom, you are too dense to matter.
Roger that!
Anyone who defends Islam as a religion, evidently accepts Sharia law, the mutilation of women, polygamy, child marriages, the absence of any rights whatsoever of females (other than to be breeding cows for the male), so called “honor” killings”, the blocking of public streets for their so-called prayers, special arrangements for them such as foot baths, prayer rooms, etc. in our airports, and a myriad of other exceptions to the rule of civilized living, you support Islam against Western Civilization and its growth and progress through the last thousand years.
Our duty is to educate people out of Islam, not to make special effort to accommodate their outrageous demands. When they don’t listen, it is the survival of the fittest. We must eradicate the danger of Islam to western civilization.
Christians are already under attack. Obama and the Supreme Court have ignored the Constitution and upheld things totally contrary to Judaeo-Christian laws and beliefs that are the very foundation of this country.
Take a good look at England from whence the foundation of much of our written law comes. English law is being changed by Sharia law. It is happening NOW. Wake up, islam is NOT our friend and is NOTT a Religion, it is a CULT! Big difference.
