Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

Rush is talking about this now. Cruz should know better than to accept some stupid reporter premise.
The obvious compromise position is do not make more muslims citizens.
All you have to do is remember the Mosque numbers that the Black Mafia used to front their crime in Philadelphia. That would be Mosque 12.
Cruz needs to learn that Islam is NOT a “Religion,” and that it has declared war on Christians and the Great Satan, America.
I certainly support a database on Muslims.
As long as we’re going to put up with them here, we must monitor them.
Remember, they hate us and they want to kill us.
The burden of proof to show they’re not Islamic terrorists should rest with them.
Yep, the truth is Trump never said that. Cruz is being foolish on this and it will “bite” him.
Hey Ted, go after Rubio first!
Cruz should have checked Truth or Fiction before stepping in it.
Rush just blew this BS out of the water.
Are there any other things Trump didn’t say that Cruz disagrees with?
Deport ALL muslims...problem solved.
If you read his response, you can tell that Cruz did not take the bait.

Trump has enough money to put this reporter in a refrigerator box under an interstate overpass. I suggest he does that.
Maybe we can add....Do you eat bacon?
Ted, beware of reporters, almost all of whom will do anything to discredit Trump.
But there sure are some FReepers doing so!
Exactly. That is not what Trump said.
And if they weren’t polling as voting 80% for democrats, you can be sure the ‘rats wouldn’t be importing as many as they could get.
Cruz should know better than to accept what the media says at face value. Kinda disappointing on his part.
What?
Cruz did not go after Trump.
Cruz was ASKED about it, and he simply said that he likes Trump and he didn't want registries for all of them.
