The results are in for one Illinois university's famous mock presidential election, but the clear winner may surprise some.
Western Illinois University's mock election predicted a landslide victory for Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, with running mate Martin O'Malley, in 2016. The predicted Sanders-O'Malley ticket garnered 404 electoral votes to Jeb Bush-Marco Rubio's 114 votes. In the popular vote, Sanders earned 741 votes (49 percent) to Bush's 577 (38 percent).
The famously accurate mock election correctly predicted the outcomes of the 2008 and 2012 elections, and the university claims it's the "largest and most elaborate mock presidential simulation in the nation."
The election was conducted over 10 sessions on the Macomb campus between Oct. 20 and Nov. 2, and thousands of students at the university participated. The sessions included simulations of the Iowa Caucuses and state primaries as well as national nominating conventions and the Electoral College vote. Throughout the process, students chose the candidates' running partners before taking the final presidential vote.
Illinois was among the few states that went red in the mock election. Iowa and Missouri were the other two Midwestern states that joined Texas, Alabama, Louisiana and Arizona, among others.
Although the race focused mostly on Sanders and Bush, the mock election also showed a slight turnout for the Libertarian Party's Lex Green (10 percent) and the Green Party's Jill Stein (3 percent).

JEB may well win the open primary here in Illinois. By the time our primary comes, Hillary will have the rat nomination wrapped up and the democrats will cross over to the republican primary in droves and vote for Bush, a certain loser against Hillary.
Trump needs to capture the republican nomination before we have our primary.
To borrow a term from Jesse Helms, the “Block Vote” will not be turning out heavily for either Hillary or Bernie.
However, WIU (and leftists everywhere) will be surprised with the Trump/Cruz ticket winning by a landslide...
WIU voted after their free marijuana...
Yep, I seem to remember posts of FR back in 2007 saying Obama could never be elected.
“WIU is insane.”
But a great party school back when I was young.

How pathetic!! Theyâre too stupid to know that Bush and Rubio both are Floridians and cannot be on the same slate.
There’s that....and, too stupid to know that El Jebbers will NOT be on the R ticket!
Don’t laugh too hard, Bernie seems to have inherited a lot of the Obama passion among the under-30 crowd. They might show up for him.
Dumb............
[Naaw... they American voters would never elect a socialist radical into the white hut.]
I signed up for a political science class several years ago. During one of the classes, the professor asked the students if they would like to live in a socialist nation. All those under the age of forty raised their hands.
America has failed its youth.
Where are the Conservative candidates for President and VP in the mock election ? Those are 4 left-winger big gubmint uniparty Combiners for which I’d never vote for under any circumstances.
Trick question. We already do.
Cool, someone gave this it’s own thread.
Funny if it was meant as a deliberate joke and not a serious excercise. I don’t know what aspect of it is most ridiculous, the tickets or the results.
Sanders/O’Malley
Jeb(lol)/Rubio (same state, no go)
UnknownLibertarian/Rand Paul
(and the Greens, who cares)
And the results are
Sanders wins over 400 E votes
Bush carries ILLINOIS, MARYLAND (nice work, O’Malley!), HAWAII, Iowa, Nevada, Missouri, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Alaska
PA is too close to call I guess, the rest for Sanders,
Mr. Unknown Libertarian get’s 10% of the popular vote. For reference Gary Johnson got 0.99% in 2012.
Weed + Acid + Crack?
Did WIU spend taxpayer money on this? Is college this much of a joke right now?
In a Sanders vs Bush election, this result may be accurate. A lot of Republicans wont vote.
I don’t understand this at all.
Some college did a mock election/”simulation” of both parties primaries and the general election, I don’t know the details of how it was conducted but apparently their results were pretty accurate the last 2 elections.
This year they were ridiculous on multiple levels.
Must be nice.
When I was in college, I never had time for schlock like that.
Gay.
Did you agree to take some of his money?
No, if the Republicans put up Yeb!, Sanders would easily win.
This would be hilarious if it wasn’t possible. But they voted Barry in for another 4 years, and half the conservatives are gonna stay home instead of voting for a non-perfect candidate. You can’t count on people learning from experience.
