(CNN)Black football players at the University of Missouri have joined calls demanding the ouster of the president of the state's four-campus university system over alleged inaction against racism on campus.
About 30 players made their thoughts known Saturday night in a tweet posted by Missouri's Legion of Black Collegians.
"The athletes of color on the University of Missouri football team truly believe "Injustice Anywhere is a threat to Justice Everywhere," read the tweet. "We will no longer participate in any football related activities until President Tim Wolfe resigns or is removed due to his negligence toward marginalized students' experience."
The players' move is the latest salvo in a spiraling debate over the experiences of African-American students at Missouri, who have complained of inaction on the part of school leaders in dealing with racism on the overwhelmingly white campus.

“Oh, and by the way, gentlemen, the DA would like to chat with some of you about certain off-campus incidents you have been involved in since your arrival in Columbus that have been, shall we say, swept under the rug.”
Looks like you were right. The President just resigned.
And itâs all sponsored by idiot alumni who fund the athletic programs rather than any scientific research.
Absolutely...let’s give the money to science students so they can grow up to promulgate notions such as Anthropological Global Warming...
A whole set of evils of which money is the root.
“A whole set of evils of which money is the root.”
Thank you for that! I guess private institutions have the right to do as they please, but state-sponsored colleges and universities should not be allowed to diminish the educational process with athletics with it’s attendant unworthy faux students. It’s all just more rah-rah and it should not be allowed. One of our kids went to Boston University. Cost about $200k. And you know what, while taking in this kind of tuition money, they were spending everything they could get their hands on on athletic facilities. Our child was studying music. Their practice rooms were in the basement of a former auto dealership on Comm Ave. that was a sweat box.
He didnât leave a bequest to its engineering or business or law departments, but only to the athletics! Heâs not alone.
So what...?
but state-sponsored colleges and universities should not be allowed to diminish the educational process with athletics with itâs attendant unworthy faux students.
Why is music, or any of the fine arts, more ‘attendant’ to the educational process than athletics...?
“Why is music, or any of the fine arts, more âattendantâ to the educational process than athletics...?
Athletes, in general, are not honor students. Our daughter was an honors student in high school, and was accepted to eight major universities based on her academics, not because she could throw a ball! I am sure that there are exceptions, but I will bet you that there are not many academically rated football players around. Colleges and universities don’t need to be the “ farm teams” for professional athletics, particularly when they drain resources that should be put into academics.
“Absolutely...letâs give the money to science students so they can grow up to promulgate notions such as Anthropological Global Warming...”
And I guess you’d be willing to give up all the microelectronics, vehicles and everything you have today to make sure no research goes to AGM is that it? Maybe to satisfy you we should set up “The Football University of the Ozarks” or some such institution, to “foster the high ideals” of athletics. Just think of all the “kegger parties,” campus rapes, etc. the rest of the schools would be missing!
I used that as an example of how alumni feed athletic vs academic programs.
And I guess youâd be willing to give up all the microelectronics, vehicles and everything you have today to make sure no research goes to AGM is that it?
Um, not really...hop off the high horse, bud; you’ll see things more clearly...
Maybe to satisfy you we should set up âThe Football University of the Ozarksâ or some such institution, to âfoster the high idealsâ of athletics
my, my, touchy, aren’t we...
“my, my, touchy, arenât we...”
No, not at all, I just think that athletics and a post-secondary education are a bad fit. Guess we disagree. Beyond that I see “professional sports” as one of those things that’s contributing to the demise of our country, because the become the be all and end all for a lot of people who use them as a substitute for living and participating in making our country work. If that’s “touchy,” count me in.
I just think that athletics and a post-secondary education are a bad fit
Well, since colleges have been sponsoring athletics for over a hundred years, your view appears to be ‘bad fit’ with them...
I see âprofessional sportsâ as one of those things thatâs contributing to the demise of our country
Hmmm...all the cultural and moral rot in this country, and you think pro sports is going to do us in...OK...
a lot of people who use them as a substitute for living and participating in making our country work
so, watching a couple of football games on a weekend, with an interest in the outcome, precludes us from functioning as citizens...who knew...?
“Well, since colleges have been sponsoring athletics for over a hundred years, your view appears to be âbad fitâ with them...”
Absolutely true, but it still doesn’t mean that college athletics have been good for post secondary education. As far as “watching a couple of football games on a weekend” is concerned, I have neigbors whose whole lives revolve around sports on TV! I went to a Raiders game with a neighbor some years ago, and the pre-game party involved “Ballpark Franks” (and nothing else would do), watching reruns on a big-screen while eating and drinking “all the right stuff.” Then going to the game which was so bad I kept awake watching the Raiderettes. Afterward, we went to a sports bar where the conversation devolved into football minutae to the point where I had to call my wife to come get me. At 3 am, this when this guy finally got home, he called and woke us up because he had just realized that “he’d lost me.” So there are people who are so developmentally disabled, to whom life revolves around team sport to the point where nothing else matters.
