EPA Vows To Lead The Global Fight Against Air Conditioners

EPA Chief Gina McCarthy wants the world to stop using hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in air conditioners and other consumers products as part of President Barack Obama's plan to fight global warming.

McCarthy is so determined to make this happen, she's taking the lead role at an ongoing United Nations summit to expand the current global treaty covering ozone-depleting substances. The EPA chief hopes that her agency's recent HFC regulations will convince other countries to join the U.S. in limiting the chemicals.

"Because of the importance of taking aggressive action on these chemicals to achieve global climate goals, I will be leading the United States delegation at that meeting," McCarthy wrote in an oped for The Guardian.

"Over the past year, the US Environmental Protection Agency has completed four separate actions that both expand the list of safer alternatives to HFCs and prohibit them from certain uses in the refrigeration air conditioning, foam, and aerosol sectors where safer alternatives such as hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs), hydrocarbons and lower-polluting blends are available," McCarthy wrote.

"Solutions are here, and it's time to amend the Montreal Protocol to reflect that," McCarthy wrote, adding that phasing out HFCs would avert 0.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by the end of the century.

The EPA unveiled its latest HFC regulation earlier this month to regulate how refrigerants are handled and ban such chemicals where "climate-friendly" alternatives are available. The EPA was joined by the Department of Energy and the Department of Defense in issuing rules to phase out HFC use wherever possible.

Do we wear armor against air conditioners, or should we just air drop a few good men?

Let them bring this initiative to Charleston, SC in the summer. Lots of luck.

“As a matter of fact, years ago on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, there was an article that claimed Houston would never have developed into a major metropolitan city without air conditioners. The heat and humidity was just too oppressive and stifling humidity to make it livable.”

I lived 40 miles north of Houston for many years and now live 20 miles north of Dallas and if anyone tries to turn off my air conditioner, it will be war and they will lose.

I grew up without air conditioning and remember sitting in school supposed to be reading my history book and I was so hot I couldn’t concentrate on the words.

I am so fed up with government, I said on another thread, I’m about to join John Galt and build another world. Who is John Galt? “Atlas Shrugged”

The only benefit I can see you to banning air conditioning might be the return of quality southern fiction writers.

But, if they insist on doing it, they can start by removing the A/C from EPA HQ in Washington. Let's see what they think about the issue come next August.

They would just declare it a hardship and take the month off, with full pay.

There is no reason people need air conditioning.

Maybe so, but using them is a perk of an industrial society. I will keep mine, thank you very much.

We didn't have flush toilets in the 1800s either. Do you want to go back to the out house?

We didn't have decent surgical procedures in the 1800s. Do you think that was a better form of life? Why, penicillin wasn't available until the early 1900s. Does the 1800s really appeal to you?

You need to screw on your thinking cap.

I spent years growing up and going to school in Tempe, AZ. It was very hot in the summer but not humid most of the time until the rains came in August. That dry heat made it tolerable most of the spring, summer and fall without air-conditioning but an evaporative or water cooler was mandatory.

But when my wife and I retired, we moved to our cattle farm in Florida to get out of the big city. We have been here almost 5 years now and there is absolutely no way I could live here in the summer without air conditioning. The reason? The heat combined with the high humidity. An evaporative cooler is not effective here for cooling because of the humidity.

I would divorce my wife and move to Timbuktu before I would stay here in the summer without some way to cool off. Sleeping at night would be impossible. There are days in the summer that are absolutely intolerable outdoors. Insufferable.

Same as in Texas. We are not doing without air conditioning and Obama will never get our air conditioner.

Their headquarters of course will be nicely air-conditioned climate controlled- you know, so they don’t have to suffer in the heat liek everyone else they are regulating

[[We got by just fine in the 1800’s without them.]]

Actually no they didn’t- many elderly and sick people succumbed to the heat- Air conditioners save lives-

The whole reason the epa wants to go after air conditioners is to eliminate more elderly and sick people- undesirables as the left like to think of htem

I saw this idiot at some House/Senate hearing a month or two ago. She is just as obstinant and uncooperative as Koskinen from the IRS. ........Both should be behind bars!
