“As a matter of fact, years ago on the front page of the Wall Street Journal, there was an article that claimed Houston would never have developed into a major metropolitan city without air conditioners. The heat and humidity was just too oppressive and stifling humidity to make it livable.”

I lived 40 miles north of Houston for many years and now live 20 miles north of Dallas and if anyone tries to turn off my air conditioner, it will be war and they will lose.

I grew up without air conditioning and remember sitting in school supposed to be reading my history book and I was so hot I couldn’t concentrate on the words.

I am so fed up with government, I said on another thread, I’m about to join John Galt and build another world. Who is John Galt? “Atlas Shrugged”

I spent years growing up and going to school in Tempe, AZ. It was very hot in the summer but not humid most of the time until the rains came in August. That dry heat made it tolerable most of the spring, summer and fall without air-conditioning but an evaporative or water cooler was mandatory.

But when my wife and I retired, we moved to our cattle farm in Florida to get out of the big city. We have been here almost 5 years now and there is absolutely no way I could live here in the summer without air conditioning. The reason? The heat combined with the high humidity. An evaporative cooler is not effective here for cooling because of the humidity.

I would divorce my wife and move to Timbuktu before I would stay here in the summer without some way to cool off. Sleeping at night would be impossible. There are days in the summer that are absolutely intolerable outdoors. Insufferable.
