Powerful Republican Congressman Paul Ryan (R-Janesville) stood firm on Thursday in his desire not to become the next Speaker of the House.
Ryan, chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, issued a statement after House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy shocked the GOP when he abruptly ended his candidacy to replace Speaker John Boehner.
"While I am grateful for the encouragement I've received, I will not be a candidate," Ryan said. "I continue to believe I can best serve the country and this (Republican) conference as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee."
CNN reported McCarthy was with his wife and children at the closed-door meeting of Republicans selecting the nominee, when he announced his decision.

Good.
How about a real conservative for a change?
It now comes to political mano a mano:
Jason Chafetz vs Daniel Webster.
I choose the latter.
The Second Edition is named:

RE: Senators are not members of the House. ....So what?
If so, would a real fighter like Ted Cruz going from Senator to Speaker be a demotion?
RE: If Cruz were selected, it would detract from his ability to run for President AND be an effective Senator. That’s three full time jobs.
Would Cruz as speaker be a promotion or demotion?
Any chance this could have been a setup job between McCarthy and Beaner?
...McCarthy was with his wife and children at the closed-door meeting of Republicans...
They’re not looking for an honorable man. They’re looking for a pious fraud.
Probably everybody weeping and wailing, tearing their clothes and beating their breast. All the aforementioned to raise enough sympathy to avoid resigning from his current position(which McCarthy has refused to do.) One cannot get rid of the degenerate, vice ridden wretches. It used to be the politicians had enough sense of decency to resign. Today they brazen it out.
By the way my post assumes the rumors are true, I acknowledge that.
Probably.
Yup. These guys are shameless, selfish, power-hungry criminals. They are also a dime a dozen. How I wish they’d have more honor like disgraced Japanese politicians: they commit harakiri.
Paul doesn’t want a bullseye painted on his back.
How about Mia Love? Let’s see how those race pimps handle that one. If a freshman senator without a resume can become president, why can’t a freshman congresswoman with a resume be elected speaker? Hmmm?
Holding office is a way for the defective to become wealthy. Where else can one have a position paying say $120,000/year and be a millionaire in three to four years and have a pension paying more than one was paid while working.
When did Trump get elected to the House of Reps?
John John Boener is now saying he may not leave....
My guess is Jeb’s buddy....Webster
Seriously?
