The billionaire real estate mogul uses a Nashville speech to emphasize his campaign is about more than him.
Donald Trump says its not all about him. No, seriously.
Campaigning in Nashville, Tennessee, Trump on Saturday paid homage to his supporters claiming they are a part of a movement and using colorful language to beg for their support.
This is a movement, said Trump, who often speaks about himself in campaign appearances. I dont want it to be about me. This is about common sense. Its about doing the right thing.
Trump also paid tribute to his setting, a country music hotbed and insisted there needed to be a greater emphasis on "law and order." And, as has become customary, he took shots at Jeb Bush, the former Florida governor who is a rival for the Republican nomination.
Beyond the bragging, Trumps appearance represented something more tangible: evidence of a campaign that has grown more tactically serious as it wears on.
His speech full, as ever, with a mix of taunts and asides was in front of the Presidential Presence Convention of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies. The group that describes itself as a grassroots movement of Republicans that seeks to restore the conservative principles of the Goldwater / Reagan Republicans.
In other words, the sorts of Republicans whose support Trump will have to solidify as the nominating contest continues. On Sunday, Ted Cruzs father Rafael Cruz is scheduled to lead a prayer breakfast at the convention.
While Trump claimed to be vessel for something bigger, he used long stretches of his speech to tout his smarts, his business savvy and his vision.
One point of emphasis and opportunity for a shot at Bush was foreign policy.
I said dont go into Iraq even though Im a very militaristic person, he said. Im much more militaristic than Bush, even the brother.
Trump said he deserved credit for predicting that the war would go poorly.
Normally I wouldnt say this, but I need your frickin votes, you understand that? he said to cheers.
Mixed in with Trumps talk of a silent majority was a call for law and order. He decried the rioting that took place in Baltimore in April in response to the death of a young black man in police custody.
The police were not allowed to protect people, said Trump. We have to be tough. We have to be smart I know cities where police are afraid to even talk to people.
Trump said he has seen policing-related incidents that are disgusting and horrible, an apparent reference to the deaths of unarmed black Americans at the hands of police officers that have received significant attention over the last year.
But he said that 99.9 percent of what police do is good. The problem is the good work doesnt get shown on television, he said.
No Trump campaign stop is complete without a few shots at the media. At one point, as Trump was criticizing CNNs coverage of a fundraiser he held on Friday We had this incredible event and they destroyed it, he said a supporter got his attention by shouting about the criminal media.
Trump used it as an opportunity to again emphasize the importance of his supporters. He attributed his continued lead in Republican primary polls to the intelligence of his supporters.
The reason is people in this country are smart. They dont believe a lot of what they see in the media.
Trump professed his admiration for several country music stars, including Trace Adkins, who have appeared in his reality show The Apprentice. And he told the story of buying a property on 5th Avenue in Manhattan from Nashville-based retailer Genesco."
My sister is married to a Texas born Mexican American. She says the ones who were born here love Trump.
I agree! And I don't give one whit if accomplishing that boosts his ego!
Be careful if you wear that Trump hat at Home Depot. The illegals there might attack
I agree with you.
Bravo, sir. Bravo.
I was an early adopter, myself. Though like you, I never had much use for Trump. I’ve yet to see a single episode of The Apprentice.
What quickly put me squarely in The Donald’s corner is my longstanding conviction that conservatism is a lost cause unless it recognizes it must challenge and defeat BOTH liberals AND the MSM.
Trump has been the first guy I’ve ever seen run who “got it” from day one.

Amen. Great point. Yet, the anti-Trumpers say he’s not pure enough, too liberal, etc. Every plan Trump has put forth or been asked about, so far (which is more than most candidates have done), is the conservative position we’ve been clamoring for, for decades.
And, he’s doing it with guts and spine....in a way conservatives AND Republicans haven’t seen, in a long, long time.
Well, after all, 5 out of 3 people don’t understand fractions.
;-)
Adds up to way more than 100
Yes....that’s been discussed :D
(Approval ratings, etc.)
LOL....CommieCore fuzzy math ;)
Man, I hadn’t heard of this before.
I like
The White House, one year after President Trump is inaugurated.
I’d rather vote for the guy that USED to sound liberal, than the guy who always sounded conservative, but delivered NOTHING.
When reversing direction, you first let off the gas, stop forward motion, then shift into reverse, then let out the clutch, then open the throttle.
I'm with you friend.
Get the JOB DONE and he can be as egotistical as he wants.
Well he certainly didn’t go through all those gentle motions with immigration.
Why do it with taxes, an issue that easily influences the day to day lives of Americans as much as immigration?
It just doesn’t sound very Trump-esque. It sounds more like something I’d expect to hear from Perry, or Christie.
Oh well, maybe someone will talk him into putting some more zing into the plan. It’s still early.
Dems have had a century to insidiously foist the current agenda on America.
I am all in favor of, and will stand shoulder to shoulder with anyone willing to take on the current govt octopus.
Anyone, including D. Trump!
He is running against the status quo politicians and the media who have divided the country and not solved problems.
Would it be ironic if he ends up voting for Trump in the general ?
