Today marks the one-year anniversary of the shot heard round America the one that left Michael Browns lifeless body lying on a Ferguson, Mo., street for hours and then left the nation reeling and roiling ever since.
Yet watching the GOP candidates and Fox News moderators shape and prioritize the nations most pressing problems Thursday night, one couldnt help but wonder: Does Black Lives Matter matter to them at all?
In a two-hour debate, which frankly felt much longer, only two candidates were even asked about race.
First, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker answered a question about the Black Lives Matter movement with largely non-responsive comments about police accountability measures.
Later, Fox News Megyn Kelly, perhaps realizing that no one asked the one black guy on stage about race, put the issue to Ben Carson, who used his expertise as a surgeon to declare us all the same under the skin.
With the exception of Rand Paul, who gave lip service to the issue of race by mentioning, as he frequently does, that hes been to Ferguson and Detroit and other places where black people can be found, everyone else remained silent on the issue, like theyd dodged a bullet.
Meanwhile, it seems like each day there is a new dash-cam video showing people of color who, unfortunately, did not dodge the bullets fired in their direction.
If the GOP hopefuls demonstrated a fraction of the passion and protectionism they dedicate to the hypothetical fetuses being discussed in a stream of anti-abortion sting videos, perhaps they could join in an actual discussion of the racial tensions, opportunity inequities, heavy-handed policing and race-based distrust that has become part of the American fabric. As Kelly correctly pointed out, it has been called the civil rights issue of our time.
If the candidates cared a little more, maybe wed even get some solutions.
They should have expected questions about race if for no other reason than nearly all of their Democratic counterparts have been caught, one time or another, flat-footed when asked about it.
But despite the stumbles of folks like former Maryland Gov. Martin OMalley, at least they seem willing to learn from the mistakes. But for Republicans, it seems more politically expedient to ignore ongoing race-based struggles.
If only black America had that luxury.
#StupidCowLivesDon'tMatter
O’Malley’s “mistake” was daring to suggest that all lives matter.
“Black lives matter” won’t play at the GOP debates because the movement, such as it is is a joke.
“Black lives did not matter at the GOP debate”
That’s one positive for the debate.
One, a life of poverty, climbing to the top, and possibly having the door slammed in his face; the Democrat, the offspring of rich, well connected people, having doors open for him magically despite his utter lack of qualifications.
Or the Bernie Sanders rally today, when he had to flee the stage when #BlackLivesMatter agitators climbed it?
#WhiteBreadMatters
#SaltinesMatter
The wink, wink, nod, nod is that it is really “Black Lives Matter More”, as the reaction to O’Malley’s first comment amply proved.
Did they not know it's one week from the anniversary of Elvis' death?
And Ramadan was only 3 weeks ago.
Worst of all, it's the one year anniversary since Mike Brown committed a strong-arm robbery at the Quik Mart. If only police would look at the calendar.
Apparently only lies and agendas REALLY matter.
I love that stuff and I really do follow the coded advice given by Pierre Andre.
A crummy commercial? Son of a bitch!
Teacher317: Black lives did not matter in any of the 100+ US cities where a black murdered a black this week and no black commentator or activist said a thing about it.
And the sky is blue. Is that what you were getting at?
Im coming less and less to give a damn what the seeming majority of blacks understand - or more likely dont - as they appear to regard it as some sort of honor to be even more stupid than the majority of whites in American society, given the state of public education, holding to it as an accomplishment to actually be proud of.
How does she interact w/Howie Carr
(a nod to the Dean of Talk Radio...
I know that the fake #black lives matter BS doesn’t mean crap to me.
Note: My daughter is black and she means a lot to me, not this so called movement.
Does the Herald actually pay this idiot to write this tripe or was this a letter to the editor?
If anyone in the special privileged community wants to argue my point, how about first releasing his juvenile records. It's been as bad as trying to see Obama's college records.
