Whether or not the other two guys were armed, proceeding to hand over some money might have been a pretty good way of distracting them, so the third guy could pull out his pistol.
Hopefully at least one of the two injured will die also.

Without hesitation, mercy or remorse. When you started the fight, you left your “civil rights” in your other pants. We have no obligation to submit to what at our age could be a fatal beating. So our choice is a simple one: we live, you die.
And yes, we never go anywhere unarmed, and our training is such that we are always alert. As our Si Gong taught us, trouble can come from anywhere at any time. Common sense says that you do all that you can to avoid trouble. But when trouble comes looking for you, and you cannot simply walk away, then the rules of engagement have changed: there aren’t any.
