Ted Cruz: Why I voted YES for Corker Iran bill
TheRightscoop ^ | 5/7/2015 | RightScoop

Posted on 05/07/2015 3:55:30 PM PDT by gwgn02

Cruz- “This bill was a missed opportunity. If Congress had acted to defend our constitutional authority – if Congress had adopted the Cruz-Toomey amendment – then we would be able to stop a bad Iran deal. Instead, the odds are now overwhelming that under these ground rules President Obama will negotiate, and Congress will acquiesce to, a terrible deal that allows Iran to acquire nuclear weapons and will endanger the lives of millions of Americans and our allies.

“I voted no on cloture because we should have insisted on amendments to put real teeth in this bill. Ultimately, I voted yes on final passage because it may delay, slightly, President Obama’s ability to lift the Iran sanctions and it ensures we will have a Congressional debate on the merits of the Iran deal. I will continue to lead the fight to prevent the Islamic Republic of Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to protect the national security of America and our allies.”

"Tom Cotton only no vote."

Tom Cotton was the only one who voted against giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

As supporters of Cruz, we are so used to seeing him throw the long ball and connect that it is disappointing to see him have to punt.
But punting is a fact of life in football.
Ted Cruz is throwing the ball out of bounds to stop the clock. But we are left in limbo not knowing if there is anything else that can be done.

I don't know about that/this. It just seems like there's a bunch of people ready and willing to excuse anything Cruz says or does — there's a lot of truth in the sarcastic comment Hawthorn made (Cruz can do no wrong. /s). I didn't like that attitude among the Obama supporters, I didn't like it among some of the Palin supporters, and I don't like it in some of the Cruz supporters.

Right is right, wrong is wrong, and the essentials thereof don't change dependent on the person being talked about.

"Bad move. The GOP is going to ram it through for Barry anyway."

BINGO!

This "I voted yes on final passage because it may delay, slightly" excuse is blowin' smoke.

So surrendering the Treaty power of the US Constitution somehow helps elect conservatives in 2016? That is pretzel logic.

Worse than that! It's subverts the Constitution and gives aid and comfort to the enemy.

We now have 98 Benedict Arnolds in the Senate.

It is a wiser move IMO to stick with FOAD and then during the campaign, have the issue to crucify liberal GOP with.
and it gives his detractors, who cling to anything they can divide conservatives one less weapon.

In the big scheme it’s not gonna kill him or really hurt him but it IMO does nothing to HELP him.

Cruz voted NO on cloture. That tells everyone where his principles reside.

One should not compare Cruz with Obama. Obama is a con whereas Cruz is the real deal.

Cruz came out right away with an explanation why he voted yes. He keeps everyone appraised of where he’s at in political battles. You don’t see that in any other candidates.

As for people blindly following Cruz, that is something that does not exist. Cruz has been followed here for years now and people here have had a lot to time to evaluate him for his sincerity. He has excelled and continues to excel beyond everyone’s expectations. The only other person that comes close to him in sincerity and communication ability is Sarah Palin, but she’s not a candidate.

I can’t give Cruz a pass on this one or twist myself into a pretzel to make excuses. I just don’t see this as a brilliant move or what the point would be of delaying the inevitable. Why would Cruz be worried about being called extreme? He’s been called extreme on a daily basis for how long now?

To me he risked losing more conservative support than he would gain by this.

I thought that the Congress already had oversight over treaties? Or is it the Senate? I guess I’m one of those that just doesn’t understand how government works.

Every day that goes by things just get more and more depressing. I really do believe that this country is just increasing it’s speed towards the edge of the cliff on a daily basis. I don’t think there is any stopping this train.

I’m not jumping on the “Cruz lost my vote today” yet. But it’s a black mark against him for me. I don’t know what else to do. I can’t just roll over and give up but it sure is disheartening. He still has more positives on his side for me than negatives and I surely don’t believe he wants Iran to get nukes.

"In the big scheme it’s not gonna kill him or really hurt him but it IMO does nothing to HELP him."

Who did Ted help by voting "Yes"?!?

Principled conservatives? No!
The Constitution? No. Art. II, Section 2, Clause 2 didn't need the bill at all.
The sponsors of the bill? No! It still would have passed 97-2.
The Demonicrats? So they will play nice after his display of bipartisan compromise? Are you kidding?!?
Iran, who now knows that whatever Traitorobama gives them, Congress will not likely overturn? Yep. They get a nice extra big helping of aid and comfort.

This was a stupid and inexcusable vote; definitely goes in Cruz’s “minus” column. He “plus” column still outweighs ... by a ton ... but this was just plain dumb.

Look my FRiend what did you want Cruz to do?

1. He voted against cloture because he wanted a real amendment to be considered on the table instead of this Corker crap.

2. The GOPe got their way leaving the Corker crap as the take it or leave it approach. If it passes, it does very little to stop a bad deal with Iran in a practical way but if it fails, the GOPe was willing to close the door and just let have Bozo shove whatever deal without congressional approval. Realistically, Bozo’s going to get his crappy Iran deal either way because no one in the Senate has a spine save for a few who are not in the leadership.

3. So Cruz voted for the crap since what little it does to stop a bad Iran deal is still better than nothing. But should a real treaty ever be considered in the Senate or the Senate agrees to vote on any “deal” with Iran, do you really think Cruz is going to vote for that?

Tom Cotton, meanwhile gets a lot of praise for being the only double-no vote today. Ok, just remember Cotton caved on the vote to raise the debt ceiling when he was in the House.

Frankly I don’t have a problem with Cruz’s vote today just like I didn’t have any problem with his absence on the Lynch vote after cloture passed. It’s not a mystery where the man stands on the issues.

Just remember one thing. All these people who have already thrown Cruz under the bus marched their little arses into a voting booth and voted for Mitt Romney and have defended that choice for over 2 years. If they can manage to supplicate themselves to an abortion backing liberal, they can damn well get a couple minor gaffes from Cruz whose record is almost perfect.

Why should he fear the “extremist” label? Who has that label damaged? Did it hurt Reagan?

He helped no one ultimately as the final vote is yet to take place and when it does, he’s a no. But it wasn’t his most shrewd move, I totally agree.

Bottom line is that they voted ‘aye’ for a stupid bill that turns the Constitution on its head and helps create an existential threat to the safety and security of the United States and our closest allies.

That wasn’t against Reagan. False comparison.

And Goldwater was a secret lib anyway, who came out later in life as such; most likely wanted LBJ to win.

As I said upthread, I think he made a mistake but when I look at the overall, he’s got a long way to go before any of the Romney voters have a leg to stand on with the rejection.

WHO HAS THAT LABEL DAMAGED?

It damaged Barry Goldwater.

Or the opportunity to have a nice lucrative contract with the Red Chinese to dispose of millions of baby corpses produced by China’s abortion mills each year. Mittens made that deal in Massachusetts.
