McDonald's MCD +0.6% worldwide sales fell a more than expected 1.7% in February, marking nine consecutive months of declines.
This comes a week after new CEO Steve Easterbrook assumed the top job. Easterbrook, who has said he considers himself an internal activist, is faced with reviving the lagging sales that cost previous CEO Don Thompson his job.
U.S. sales fell 4%, as the fast food giant continues to face heavy competition from fast casual chains like Chipotle and Panera.
Consumer needs and preferences have changed, said the company in a statement. McDonalds current performance reflects the urgent need to evolve with todays consumers, reset strategic priorities and restore business momentum.
Last week, McDonalds announced it would start to phase out the use of chickens that are raised with human antibiotics.
Sales in Asia, where the company is still being punished by customers following a food safety scandal last year, declined by 4.4%. Rebuilding brand trust by strengthening McDonalds quality and value perceptions is one of APMEAs top priorities for 2015, the company said.
Total sales were partially offset by a 0.7% gain in Europe sales, where the company saw strength in the U.K. and Germany but still faces headwinds in Russia.
The 1.7% worldwide sales decline reported by McDonalds was much worse than estimates of a 0.3% decline, according to analysts polled by research firm Consensus Metrix, and is telling of how much work the company has left to do under Easterbrook. Last month the company reported a 1.8% decline.
Shares of McDonalds declined 1% to $96.14 in premarket trading and are up 5% over the last 12 months.

Wendy's, Burger King and Jack in the Box seem to be the closest in price, although MCD has more revenues than the rest of them combined, and then some.
***served to you in a paper cup, were thick but tasted like the cheaper version of ice cream, ice milk.***
The last shake I bought at McDonalds, I knew something was wrong as the shake was light, more like foam, and had a gritty sugary taste and I don’t think it had any real ice cream in it. I’ve never ordered another one there.
At SONIC, the large shake I got was heavy, but cold only at the bottom and not on the sides. Tasting it, I came to the conclusion the cup had a small amount of ice cream in the bottom, then the rest was filled with whipped topping as the whole thing tasted of nothing but whipped topping.
I compare all shakes with those made at Barnett’s drive in near here which are REAL SHAKES and MALTS!
Is it me or has a big mac shrunk also? I heard they are going to phase out the double cheeseburger. dumb idea.
The Coffee at McDonalds is pretty good.
Better than Starbucks Brew and I think it’s just a buck.
No, it happened way before that. The attack of the misinformed fat-phobes.
Fries are shown on the right side of the menu.
I remember George and Johns on main street. Great fries. Good burgers. But Blakes is great too.
Completely unexpected?
Nope!

I go into McD’s in the cold weather when I want a small, cheap hot lunch. Here’s what I hate the most: the line jumpers. They make me so angry that I lose my appetite. The staff does nothing about it.
Second to that are the employees who don’t answer if you ask them a question. “Speak English much?” doesn’t work and can get you punched.
> “Wendy’s, Burger King and Jack in the Box seem to be the closest in price...” <
Thanks. As I said, I don’t eat out much. I tried those McDonald’s meals because someone gave me a gift card. I was pleased to find, though, that the dollar items I tried satisfied me. There’s no Jack in the Box around here, but I have mostly favorable recollections of the cheap items from Wendy’s. I haven’t tried them lately, though.
I’m not so much supporting McDonald’s itself as the basic idea of cheap fast food. I want such places to continue to exist.

I don’t recall the last time I had a real shake or malt. I compare them to the ones I had in my childhood. :-)
“Now, isn’t that worth it? “
Thanks for the good laugh.
.
I don't think there's any danger of these places disappearing, as long as the minimum wage doesn't get jacked up big time. MCD is the most hated fast food chain in the world, except for all of its customers, who buy more stuff from MCD than its major peer competitors *combined*. Yes, I'm including the big pizza and fried chicken fast food chains.
“The Coffee at McDonalds is pretty good.

Yeah, but you can’t call Starbucks coffee either! Peet’s was good until Peet himself died, now it’s getting to be “corporate coffee” too.
>>the Worlds Finest Chocolate is sold right across the street from Maxiums....the Greek restaurant. ..oh ...good times...<<
I shall check those places out — not my usual way but why the heck not?
George and Johns was always packed. As I worked the evening shift at American Tank and Steel on San Juan Blvd, we would phone in our orders, then one of us would go up there and pick up the order at lunch time. Later I got a day shift job at Production Equipment Corp.
Then one day, the lines were gone as the new McDonalds opened just down the street from them. No more lines! But soon, no more George and Johns.
When I lived there as a kid in 1954-56, the Dairy Queen just across Main St from where George and Johns later opened, used to make great burgers. It was closed when George and Johns opened.
Years later, when I saw George and Johns were gone, I had to go to Dizzy Land and Copper Penny to have a good cry.
Then BLAKES opened.
Everyone should try Steak and Shake, they have meals for less than 4 bucks, and the best milkshakes ive had since i was a child.
