McDonald's MCD +0.6% worldwide sales fell a more than expected 1.7% in February, marking nine consecutive months of declines.
This comes a week after new CEO Steve Easterbrook assumed the top job. Easterbrook, who has said he considers himself an internal activist, is faced with reviving the lagging sales that cost previous CEO Don Thompson his job.
U.S. sales fell 4%, as the fast food giant continues to face heavy competition from fast casual chains like Chipotle and Panera.
Consumer needs and preferences have changed, said the company in a statement. McDonalds current performance reflects the urgent need to evolve with todays consumers, reset strategic priorities and restore business momentum.
Last week, McDonalds announced it would start to phase out the use of chickens that are raised with human antibiotics.
Sales in Asia, where the company is still being punished by customers following a food safety scandal last year, declined by 4.4%. Rebuilding brand trust by strengthening McDonalds quality and value perceptions is one of APMEAs top priorities for 2015, the company said.
Total sales were partially offset by a 0.7% gain in Europe sales, where the company saw strength in the U.K. and Germany but still faces headwinds in Russia.
The 1.7% worldwide sales decline reported by McDonalds was much worse than estimates of a 0.3% decline, according to analysts polled by research firm Consensus Metrix, and is telling of how much work the company has left to do under Easterbrook. Last month the company reported a 1.8% decline.
Shares of McDonalds declined 1% to $96.14 in premarket trading and are up 5% over the last 12 months.

The 1st drive through was at Ft Hauchuca to cater to the troops.
Ronald scares me...
No French fries offered on the menu.
A few years ago years ago McDonalds had a “Dollar Menu” where I could purchase a double cheeseburger for a buck. Then they stripped a slice of cheese from it and called it a McDouble. Now they sell a regular cheeseburger for a dollar and charge $1.39 for a McDouble on their “Dollar and More” menu. Figure out those inflation numbers. McObama says our economy is doing great and with low 2% inflation - what a clown....
Yuppers.
I think that McDouble is $1.fiddy now.
No antibiotics... one more appeal to intellectual liberal elites who would not be caught dead in a McDonalds.
Parents have enough problems getting kids to eat healthy at home - they don't need to take them out for that 'special surprise' only to have the same problem. McDonald food should be good, the place should be fun, the employees clean cut, and nothing EVER should feel scary.
Here's my suggestion. Bring back good tasting french fries... also sell the 'healthy' ones. Let customers choose which ones they want.
Kind of like they did with 'new coke' and 'coke classic' which strangely morphed back into 'coke'.
Tell liberal elite know-it-alls to go to their up-scale restaurants and tell their chefs to make their food taste like cardboard... and to leave YOUR food alone.
Remember the McSeeweed - McLean - sandwich? NO ONE WANTED IT EXCEPT THE PEOPLE WHO WOULD NEVER EVER WALK INTO A MCDONALS. STOP listening to those people..
But you forgot that that menu offers “And More...”
More is good aint it?
Strangely enough the coffee at McDonalds is pretty good. I guess liberal elites haven’t told them to swap it out for dishwater... yet.
♫Bye bye miss American deep fried McDonalds Apple Pie..♪
♫Them good old boys was eating burgers and tallow fried fries..
The monterey melt IS delicious and their fries are better than McDodo.

Amazing. I'm in Florida and it's exactly the same here...
You know that smelly nursing home you're going to 'live' in when you're 95?
Well because McDonalds was nice enough to serve you tasteless french fries when you were young, you'll get to 'live' in that nursing home an extra two hours and 45 minutes.
Now, isn't that worth it?
Yes I am. Just read the list of ingredients in the "food" manufactured by McD.
Real food does not contain what their "food" contains
The youtube stars shop at Whole Foods. They are well versed on what a hydrogenated fat, carrageenan or TBHQ is--this generation is lost to McDonalds and the chemical food industry.
Got any favorite multi-generational hole in the wall restaurants here?
Well we are certainly in agreement on that score! There is just too much “fake” food around today, and when you look at the populous, you know too many folks eat too much of it.
You two are like the monks who are only allowed to speak once a year, and only one of them. That’s an old joke. Let me know if you heard it.
