Judge refuses mother's plea to treat terminally-ill son (Where Obamacare will end)
The Telegraph ^ | 14 Feb 2015 | Patrick Sawer

Doctors believe that a terminally-ill teenager who has a brain tumour will die within weeks after a judge gave them permission to withhold treatment.

The 18-year-old man’s parents wanted chemotherapy to continue and his mother had launched a “passionate” fight “for his life” at a fraught late-night hearing at the Court of Protection in London.

She said her son was “absolutely adored” and a “miracle child” and urged judge Mrs Justice Hogg not to rule that he “has to die”.

Full title: "Judge refuses mother's plea to treat terminally-ill son, saying he should be allowed to die"

Absolutely gut wrenching. This is where things ill logically end up here. Call it a preview of coming attractions.

Prayers for this family.

Parse it a bit. There will in fact be no "death panels".

A few judicial decisions, and then nothing but individual bureaucratic decisions.

But she said she had to base her decision on the evidence and decide what was in the teenager’s best interests, and made no criticism of doctors or medical staff.

So death is in the teenager's best interest?

If you read the article, the patient cannot really move, is not fully sentient and cannot make decisions for himself. He is irreparably brain-damaged and dying.

The hospital workers must feel like they are torturing a caged animal.

Mom and Dad have been fighting for years for this kid, and cannot stop their fighting even when it is for the best.

In all fairness, doctors have been doing this longer than any of us have lived. It happens at a point when doctors admit to themselves that they are powerless to stop the inevitable.

Family members and especially parents may want extraordinary measures to be taken, but it is truly malpractice to carry out surgery or prescribe treatment that is painful, dehumanizing and meaningless.

A good example is a surgeon who cuts into a patient only to find that they have advanced, metastatic cancer. So they discontinue the surgery and close the wound. If a doctor is a person of faith, they would typically say that the patient “is in God’s hands, now.”

The real anguish happens when we try to cling to life when it is time to die, for others or ourselves. Life is not ours to give or take away, nor to cling to when it is over.

Life is like that, so annoying for the staff.

Thank God we're finally getting to a time where laws will mandate that staff annoyance assessment comes before a family's fight for their child's life.

I mean, is just a matter of obvious, simple resource allocation. I for one can't understand why people don't show a little respect for optimum systems throughout.

Judge Hogg. It sounds like it’s straight out of the pages of Atlas Shrugged with names like Wesley Mooch.

So death is in the teenager's best interest?

She had to kill him to save him.

I agree that some decisions are about resource allocation, and I am not in support of that.

However sometimes it is just futile care, futile torture. I have watched locked in stroke patients be lab rats for medical students. I have watched dying systems failing patients be lab rats for just one more torturous procedure or medication. Horrific.

She had to kill him to save him.

No she stopped futile most likely torturous treatments and brought the inevitable a little closer.

My aunt was terminal. They still insisted on operating one more time. 40 stitches and nothing but pain for her and the family. She died two weeks after the surgery. I swear they do it just for the money.
