Obama to propose two free years of community college for students

President Barack Obama on Friday will propose making two years of community college free for students. In a White House video posted Thursday evening, Obama said he wanted to offer “a little preview” of his plans for the Jan. 20 State of the Union address.

“What I’d like to do is to see the first two years of community college free for everybody who’s willing to work for it,” Obama said. “It’s something we can accomplish, and it’s something that will train our workforce so that we can compete with anybody in the world.”

The proposal would make two years of community college free for students with a C+ average who attend school at least half-time and who are making “steady progress” toward their degree.

Obama will visit Pellissippi Community College in Tennessee on Friday. Beginning this year, any state high school graduate is eligible for two years of free community college tuition under the Tennessee Promise. Federal funding would cover three-quarters of the average cost of community college, and Obama is asking states to pick up the rest of the tab — assuming Congress agrees to the plan in the first place. “I hope we’ve got the chance to make sure that Congress gets behind these kinds of efforts to make sure that even as we rebound and grow in 2015, that it benefits everybody and not just some,” the president said in the video.

To be eligible, community colleges would have to offer academic programs that fully transfer credits to local public four-year colleges and universities or training programs with high graduation rates that lead to in-demand degrees and certificates. Community colleges must also adopt “promising and evidence-based institutional reforms” to improve student outcomes.

If all 50 states participate, the proposal could benefit 9 million students each year and save students an average of $3,800 in tuition, the White House said. Nirvi Shah contributed to this report.

It’s like tag-team wrestling.

Only nowhere near as credible or entertaining.

Free? You mean the classes will be held in unheated, abandoned buildings and the instructors will be working for nothing using online, open source texts?

I hope we’ve got the chance to make sure that Congress gets behind these kinds of efforts

This is a set up. He wants this to be the Congress of no. He will propose every cockamamie idea now knowing that Congress will say no. Then he can moan and whine about all the dems tried to do.

*First* two years of a two year program ?

THEN, when they get their degrees, they will get a free house and two free cars!

Does it end with this man? Will it ever end?

Indoctrination will for the time being remain voluntary.

As a former physicist, I was very intrigued to read your posting from several decades ago. Do you believe that you will be able to improve your technology so that you can actually transmit people and material objects a few decades forward, or will you simply be able to post messages that are 40+ years out of date?

Because indoctrination on college campuses has been mandatory for a very, very long time.

City College of San Francisco —it is literally ACROSS THE STREET from Housing projects and even with a California Board of Governor WAIVER classes are FREE. You must pay NOTHING back.

Yet how many black kids take the classes being shoved in their faces..?

VERY, very few.

If he thinks this will get more young black men into education, well, incredibly, this won’t work.

Yeah, a C+ is already what an F was in the 1970’s, which in turn was equivalent to a “WTF are you even doing in this school?” in the 1950’s.

He’s trying to literally buy as many votes as he can by promising “free” stuff to as many people as possible. He’s a criminal.

I can’t begin to imagine what the effects would be of letting all “students” hang out at community colleges for two or three years after HS graduation, for free. It would also make students less accountable to do well enough to get into college while they’re in HS.

"Constitutionally clueless Constitution “expert” Obama once again wrongly ignores the following. The states have never delegated to the feds, expressly via the Constitution, the specific power to appropriate revenues for vote-winning intrastate schooling purposes."

Since WWII, the federal government's meddling in state and local education has increased by leaps and bounds. Ever heard of Common Core's top-down curriculum mandates and the federal nutrition guidelines imposed on school lunch programs? Ever heard of the federal courts laying down rules for high school commencement speeches? Ever heard of federal education loans and grants, for both schools and students, that come with strings attached?

I'm not saying it's constitutional, but it's been happening for fifty years.

Who defines what's "in demand"? The marketplace or the gov't? Or need I even ask?

Also -- there is an implicit assumption that this is geared to 18-year-olds who just graduated from High School. But can it be limited to just them? How about everybody in the country over the age of 60 just decide to enroll in community college and give the Leftist professors hell. It would be free entertainment, right?

That would break the system pretty quick.
