The ESTRANGED is Taking the Kids to DC Tomorrow. Is It OK? DC FREEPERS? Can you hear me?

The kids are going with the estranged, who doesnt have the great judgement in the best of times, to do monument visits in DC.

So aside from the minor detail of it being over 100 degrees, (Good Grief!) how is it in DC? Power in the city? All the little angels being good?

Please tell.

Tell her to stay away from the Green Line! If she stays near the monuments, she should be fine. As you say, though, it will be 450 degrees in the shade.

There is still substantial storm damage and power outages in the area. I have been listening to the Montgomery County scanner. Probably not the best time to go. Services are already under pressure for the clean up and power will be out until next weekend in many places. I wouldn't go there.

Why don’t you offer to go with her and the kids — just for their safety? The kids would enjoy having their parents show them national monuments if you could both set aside your differences for the day and be on your best behavior. (And refrain from commenting on her judgement.)

DC is great.

Before my divorce was finalized, I would never let my X2B take my kids anywhere.

Nothing good can come of it. It can be neutral, or bad.

Put a saw in their hands and let them help clean up.

I live in Northern Va and we got our power back in about 20 hours. DC is still messed up and it will take a week before they get all the power back on up there.

I would be hesitant about touring there any time soon.

Violent storms can pop up very fast this week. If they’re out on the mall, that would be my concern. But, I’m an old man. They are young and could probably handle it.

If it is the estranged’s visitation time it doesn’t much matter what else is going on or what will happen. the courts don’t care until after something bad happens.

Nearly 600K homes are still without power in the DC Metro area. Everything that depends on electrical power is affected. The outages are spotty.

I live in Woodbridge, VA about 25 miles south of DC. We were on the southern margin of the storm Friday night and didn’t catch what Maryland, DC, and most of Northern VA caught. Except for a couple of flickers, power in our neighborhood never failed. Two miles from here, the gas stations are in “pay first inside mode”; all the card readers in the pumps are down because the link to the service provider is out. Yet Wegmans (2.5 miles from here) is operating normally.

Since ESTRANGED is probably a little hard to talk to in general terms, ask for his/her specific plans (i.e., how much cash are they planning to take) to deal with all the instances where electrical power is involved: buying tickets in the Metro, ATMs, gas station pumps, restaurants, shopping, etc. Also be aware that because they are free, open, and COOL, all the museums on the mall are going to be more packed than normal for the summertime (which is bad anyway). It may be a long, difficult, miserably hot day.

If the schedule permits, waiting a few days for the DC visit will see a big improvement in the experience. The various utility companies are estimating power back in most areas towards the end of the week. It is also supposed to be relatively cooler (low 90s) towards the end of the week.

Right now, there are state declarations of emergency being issued, bags of ice are being distributed, and cooling centers have been opened. Not exactly optimal for sightseeing.

The fact that you posted this on FR indoicates to me that the ESTRANGED has made the right choice and is no longer with you. So, it would be best if you stayed out of her life as much as possible.
