An Oregon man is at death's door in a hospital battling a rare case of the infamous “Black Death” plague, health officials said.
The unidentified man, who is in his 50s, was bitten on the hand while trying to pull a mouse away from a stray cat on June 2 and got sick several days later, doctors at St. Charles Medical Center-Bend told The Oregonian newspaper.
The man was thought to be suffering from septicemic plague — meaning the ruthless bacteria was spreading in his bloodstream — and was in critical condition on Tuesday, doctors said.
Karen Yeargain, the county health department's communicable disease coordinator, told The Oregonian that officials were working to confirm that the man had the plague, but that all the symptoms were there, including stomach pain, bleeding mouth, nose and anus and dying tissue.
He's just the fifth person to catch the plague in the state since 1995.
Only about 10 to 15 people in the United States catch the frightening illness each year, typically in western states.
Globally, health officials report about 1,000 to 3,000 cases per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

My heart goes out to the guy and I sincerely hope he gets well, but what on earth would possess somebody to try to take a mouse from a stray cat?!?!?
Only a freeper could turn a story about a guy dying of the plague into a left-right political issue. Sigh...
Plague is (still) endemic on the West Coast. I was camping at some BLM sites in the San Gabriels (or maybe Mt Pinos) and there were warning signs saying do not mess with the ground squirrels, they carry bubonic plague.
Unlike this guy I did not mess with the rodents, any rodents.

Even before I clicked on the post I expected some comments along those lines. And I was not disappointed.
The guy tried to remove a live mouse from his cat's mouth with his bare hand, which is stupid on three or four levels. Not your typical right-winger behavior.
Conservatives don't simply have a certain political bent. They also bear a lot of common sense attributes.

That’s scary! I thought that the plague was wiped out a century or so ago.

Of course what is called Plague nowadays is a pale shadow of the "Black Death" version of Plague.
Sort of like what is called flu is small potatoes compared to the Spanish Flu which was the last great pandemic.
LOL. I own 3 cats at this point and have often taken away birds and mice from them - and lived to fight another day. After this story, though, I’ll make sure to wear my gardening gloves. What this has to do with politics, though, is behind me.
One poor guy in Oregon, God bless him, and prayers up... is very sick, and it makes national news.
