In a display of defiance at the U.S. Capitol’s governing gun lobby, Rep. Jim McDermott, D-Wash., and eight colleagues have introduced legislation to reinstate a ban on carrying loaded firearms in America’s national parks.
The legislation was prompted by January’s murder of Mt. Rainier National Park ranger Margaret Anderson. Anderson was shot as she set up a road block for a car that didn’t stop at a chain-up checkpoint.

It became illegal to pack heat in national parks in the early 1980′s under the Reagan Administration.
The gun ban was overturned in 2009. Senate Republicans attached a pack-heat provision to legislation designed to control excesses and hidden fees charged by credit card companies.
Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Wash., is cosponsoring the legislation along with House members from California, New York and Virginia.
Advocates for loaded guns have cited such dangers as encounters with grizzly bears in the back country of national parks in the Rockies and Alaska. In response, an association of National Park Service retirees has argued that statistically there is a greater chance that visitors will be struck by lightning than mauled by a bruin.
“Millions of families visit our national park historic sites and monuments every year to see our nationally protected sanctuaries and learn about our nation’s history,” said McDermott. “Why anyone should need or be allowed to carry a loaded firearm in our national parks simply doesn’t occur to me.”

This is the same treasonous piece of excrement that went to Iraq in 2002/2003 to defend Saddam Hussein.
The dreadful and deeply saddening event that occurred when Charles Manson talked people into killing for him makes me question why on earth people should be allowed to have freedom of speech.
Same logic.
He thinks a national park is several acres of grass around a monument not several thousand sq. miles of forest.
The shooter, who had already shot four people, flew through a checkpoint for *snow tires*, which is all there would have been even if there had been the old rule against guns in federal parks.
So this is an utterly meaningless effort, other than to restrict honest citizens from being armed.
Using McDermott’s weird logic, because Barney Frank’s boyfriend was running a gay prostitution ring in Frank’s basement, congressmen should be prohibited from having basements.
A national park is one of the smartest places to carry a gun, the isolation and the large carnivores running around make it prudent. Fortunately for the young college girls hiking in the woods most perverts are too lazy to hike out to trails where they are only protected by a thin layer of tent fabric at night with no locks. The bears unfortunately are already there.
Even before guns were allowed in the parks, in Denali you would be considered a fool if you were not carrying while hiking. By the park rangers!

Well, obviously the murdering thug would have been aware of the law preventing the carry of firearms in national parks and left his weapon at home out of fear of the law! Duh!!

Exactly. And we, the citizens, his employers and superiors, don't need to "need" a certain right nor are we to be required to convince him of our "need" in order to have that right. We already have the right.
