Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry failed to submit enough valid signatures to qualify for the Virginia primary ballot, state GOP officials said Friday evening.
Perry’s campaign told state election officials it had submitted 11,911 signatures, but a Virginia Republican familiar with the situation said that the Texas governor did not submit the required 10,000.
Earlier Friday, the Republican Party of Virginia certified former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul (Tex.) to appear in the March ballot.
Four candidates — Romney, Perry, Paul and former House speaker Newt Gingrich — turned in thousands of signatures by the deadline. State party officials are spending the day certifying the signataries.
They have not examined Gingrich’s signatures yet, but expected to do so by late Friday night.
Candidates had until 5 p.m. to collect 10,000 signatures from across the state, including 400 from each congressional district.

No one in VA registers by party, there are only registered voters who show up at a primary and ask for either an R or D voting card. Then you get ‘spotted’ as an R or D voter, tho you could have crossed over. It’s a nightmare not knowing WHO your voters are, but no one has a list of registered Republicans or registered Democrats in VA.

If he’s misquoting Jerry Kilgore, Ryan won’t have a job tomorrow. The 4-6000 is a report from a source so it may be wrong.
If I had my Va campaign in Jerry Kilgore’s hands I wouldn’t expect results like this... amazing.

Wonder if the state of VA also allows ballot access through payment of $ if one does not get on the ballot through collection of signed petitions? Here in FL a candidate can collect signatures or pay the $ for ballot access.

NBC12 is reporting that only 4 to 6K of the 11,911 signatures are valid. This stinks so bad! Do they have numbers or not?!! This entire breaking story has been all innuendo and headlines with no solid numbers. I am to believe that a guy who has served 4 consecutive terms in Texas missed the mark by 50% or MORE? Doesn’t matter. According to the news reports, Primary in Missouri is just for show. Real decision will be in Caucuses. Pubbies decided they didn’t want the contest decided by primaries.
For some reason, it was decided to go ahead and hold it anyway. Primary is thus just a non-binding referendum.

The process seems good to me. If you can’t find 50 volunteers to collect 200 signatures each how much chance did you really have to win in that state anyway? You can’t will yourself onto the ballot. You need to demonstrate a viable campaign and signatures are a very fair way of doing that, more fair than having to pay to get on.

No, but he DID run a national campaign once, for 435 races. You may recall, it was back in 1994. He managed to pull off a GOP majority in the House for the first time in 40 years. Followed up successfully two more times, too.
This is a ground game in each of the states. Once funded, Newt will be able to do a fine organizing job through his surrogates in the states, districts and precincts across the country.
WaPo, 53 sec ago is reporting that Perry failed to submit 10K signatures...
Jerry Kilgore, former state attorney general and chairman of Perry’s campaign in Virginia, said Friday night that he was disappointed that the candidate didn’t reach the required number of signatures. But, he said, qualifying for the Virginia ballot is a “daunting task.”
“Hopefully he will do better in other states,” he said. “He can focus on other states.”
I’m just trying to understand why a presidential candidate has to submit 10,000 signatures to be on the ballot.
Why not 107,321?
