Magellan Strategies ^ | 10-22-10 | David Flaherty

Magellan Data and Mapping Strategies today released the results of an automated survey of 1,067 likely voters in the state of Colorado looking at the race for Governor. The findings show Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and former Congressman Tom Tancredo in a statistical tie. Among likely voters, Democrat John Hickenlooper has 44%, American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo has 43%, and embattled Republican candidate Dan Maes has 9% support. The generic “other candidate” has 2%, and only 2% responded as undecided.

Since our Colorado Governor survey on August 25th, support for Dan Maes has plummeted from 27% to 9%, a total of 18 points. It is clear the vast majority of former Dan Maes supporters are moving into the Tom Tancredo column. Since our August survey, support for Tom Tancredo has increased from 17% to 43%, a total of 27 points. John Hickenlooper has not been able to reach the crucial 50% threshold, and has in fact dropped 2 points since our August survey, from 46% to 44%. The following table looks at the ballot test by major voting subgroups....

“Wasn’t this a case of the establishment candidate being horribly flawed (plagiarism charges) AND the Tea Party backed candidate being downright awful as well?”

This is my interpretation as well. Not enough due diligence on Maes, or perhaps the Tea Partiers could have supported a stronger candidate and all this would be a moot conversation.

Looks like our female friends are keeping this close again. Tancredo is +11 amongst men, and -11 amongst women.

He just had his own “bitter clingers” moment, accusing rural people of wanting to murder gays!!!!!

Tancredo needs to buy time on all the small town stations pronto!

Hickenlooper’s hate attack on “rural, western people” is here: (starts at about 1:50)

He essentially blames farmers and ranchers for death of Mathew Shepard.

A win by Tancredon would be a great victory for border security.

Tancredo was just on with Mark Levin. They talked a bit about Hugh Hewitt. Mark says he’s friends with Hugh and would talk with him about his stand, especially now that most Republicans, including party leaders are now backing Tom.

“The Party Elders didn’t listen to the people about problems Maes had and pushed him anyway. “

Nobody ‘pushed’ Maes, McInniss imploded and Maes became the nominee by default.

At this point, CO conservatives need to unify around Tancredo. Painful for me to say that because I didnt like what Tanc did, but at this point, he’sthe only viable conservative. Tanc for Gov.

“If Maes doesn’t draw at least 10% in the Gubernatorial election, the Republican Party will be decertified as a “Major Party” in Colorado and have the pleasure of running as a “Minor” (i.e. Third) Party until the next Gubernatorial race.”

The thought of the useless and feckless GOP being decertified in favor of a conservative third party is just wonderful.

“I would think that adding to the law that any party that is able to elect a member of their part to fill either a Federal Senate or Representative seat has the option of being considered a major party.”

No way. The GOP and it’s cohorts in the Democratic party write laws like this with the intent of keeping 3rd paries off the ballot. Can’t have those uppity 3rd parties challenging their hegemony now can we.

The GOP can go pound sand as far as I’m concerned. If they fail to keep their ballot status, then let them see how much they enjoy having to circulate petitions just to get a spot on the ballot.

What is Hewitt's problem? I haven't kept up on what his beef with Tancredo is, but from what little I've read it seems he's spouting the liberal line and holding onto it for dear life in spite of the facts.

Perhaps it's Tancredo's record ... or, rather, lack of it. He was great at issuing bomb-throwing press releases. But his record of legislative accomplishment is amazingly sparse.

Tanc is not my favorite person....mainly because he seems like a one-issue person.....immigration. But, at the same time, he is the best candidate at this point. He is correct on the issues, so if I could vote, I would proudly vote for him.

And that idiot d-bag Michael Steal is still campaigning for Maes.
He would rather the seat go to the Democrat, just like NY-23.

RNC, it’s time to fire this guy!

The GOP organization in Colorado is so dysfunctional they deserve desertification. At least this will provide the impetus to completely replace the existing leadership.

I do not see agreeing with ASB as wanting to kill off the Republican party. This is exactly the kind of wake up call I think the pubbies need. There are more registered Republicans in Colorado than any other party yet they are looking at being classified a minor party. It appears to me this is due to almost unbelieveable incompetence on the part of the state party organization. Republicans have been taking conservatives for granted for decades and doing very little to try to keep them. This is what they get for their policy of wooing moderates. Maybe once they win back major party status they will work harder to keep it. I hope the Republican party folks in other states are watching this and taking notes.

Come on man, that's not a fair criticism. Michael Steele is supporting Maes because Maes is the GOP nominee. You cannot honestly expect the chairman of the GOP to NOT support his/her nominee.

In this particular case, there is also the issue of the Party status in the state. Remember, if the GOP fails to get 10% in this race, they become a “minor” party in CO, and have to work with all of the HUGE legal disadvantages that come with that new status.

I'm pulling hard for Tancredo, and I am not Steele biggest fan; but come on, supporting the GOP nominee is what Steele is supposed to do. He's also supporting O'Donnell, Buck, and a few other Tea Party nominees who are otherwise not getting local GOP Party support. He was the first one on the phone with Cornyn after Cornyn threatened not to support O'Donnell, basically ordering him to send money immediately to show that ALL nominees will be supported.

The day we start expecting the Chairman of the RNC to support the candidates of other parties is the day we're going to be shouting bloody murder at FR, because you can bet your ass they'll be supporting the Murkowskis, Bennetts, Castles, Crists, and Specters in Third-Party runs over Conservatives who won the nomination.

Just hope if that happens that Hickenlooper doesn’t also end up winning - it would be a double insult to have the party reduced to ‘minor’ status and have the Dem eek out a victory at the same time.

Colorado’s electoral votes would be critical in 2012 though to defeat Obama, and the fundraising limits placed on the party by being in “minor” status is a reason for concern, but they’ll just have to find a way to improvise.

He achieved a grade of “A” from the National Taxpayers Union (NTU) for each year that he served in Congress. He was given a “Taxpayers Friend Award” from the NTU for each year that he served in Congress (the award is given to members of Congress that are “one of the strongest supporters of responsible tax and spending policies”).

He achieved a score of “100%” from the National Right to Life Committee for the 106th, 107th, 109th and the ongoing 110th Congress.

He achieved a grade of “A” from the National Rifle Association (NRA) in its ratings given for the 2006 election cycle and has been awarded a rating of “A” from Gun Owners of America in its “House Ratings for the 110th Congress”.
