Magellan Data and Mapping Strategies today released the results of an automated survey of 1,067 likely voters in the state of Colorado looking at the race for Governor. The findings show Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and former Congressman Tom Tancredo in a statistical tie. Among likely voters, Democrat John Hickenlooper has 44%, American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo has 43%, and embattled Republican candidate Dan Maes has 9% support. The generic “other candidate” has 2%, and only 2% responded as undecided.

Since our Colorado Governor survey on August 25th, support for Dan Maes has plummeted from 27% to 9%, a total of 18 points. It is clear the vast majority of former Dan Maes supporters are moving into the Tom Tancredo column. Since our August survey, support for Tom Tancredo has increased from 17% to 43%, a total of 27 points. John Hickenlooper has not been able to reach the crucial 50% threshold, and has in fact dropped 2 points since our August survey, from 46% to 44%. The following table looks at the ballot test by major voting subgroups....

If Maes doesn't draw at least 10% in the Gubernatorial election, the Republican Party will be decertified as a “Major Party” in Colorado and have the pleasure of running as a “Minor” (i.e. Third) Party until the next Gubernatorial race.

This is the type of kick in the pants that the GOP needs.

I got this poll call at home...nice to see the actual results - it was just a straight candidate poll, no push on issues questions...NICE.

Of course, the state legislature could also change the election law to avoid that.

Maes should ‘man up’ and drop out...better Tancredo than the democrat; no question.

This seems like an excellent plan for ensuring that a Democrat wins in 2014....

The Tanc is coming on fast!

Go, Tom!

No sanctuary cities. No cooperation with Holder’s Dept. of Injustice in administrative amnesty programs.

And a conservative in the state house for the next congressional district redistricting.

Saw Tanc on FOX the other day. He said that at the point he got into the race it was too late to run as a Republican.

What is Hewitt's problem? I haven't kept up on what his beef with Tancredo is, but from what little I've read it seems he's spouting the liberal line and holding onto it for dear life in spite of the facts.

How is it “killing them off”?

They would just not have automatic ballot spots. They would have to do the ground work and hustle for signatures and deadlines.

This would force the GOP to rebuild their ground level machine and not depend on being a “Major Party” to avoid all of the nitty gritty work.

This would be a good and strong building exercise for them.

The Party Elders didn’t listen to the people about problems Maes had and pushed him anyway. The more people learned about him, the more didn’t like him.

The primary was over before he came into the race so he was precluded from running as a pub. I believe!! In my opinion a lot of those Maes voters will change their mind and either vote for Tancredo or not vote!

I don’t trust Tancredo, and don’t believe he’s good for the GOP. Every time I hear him talk he has not distinguished between legal and illegal immigrants. It won’t take much for the Dems to use someone like that to clobber all Conservatives and lock in the hispianic vote.

Wait, who is really at fault here for Dan Maes having won the nomination? I thought McInnis was the establishment "party elders" candidate and Maes was the Tea Party backed candidate?

Wasn't this a case of the establishment candidate being horribly flawed (plagiarism charges) AND the Tea Party backed candidate being downright awful as well?

Either way, as much as I hate 3rd party voting, in this particular case there is no other option than to vote Tancredo.

Hewitt is a ‘comprehensive immigration reform’ advocate. Tancredo is one of the few congressional leaders who had the balls to stand up to the establishment of both party’s and fight illegal immigration, this country’s number one problem.
